Gotcha. So what makes it more valid than USNWR?
Because it's based on data. A way to compare a school's average GPA and MCAT of accepted applicants with your GPA and MCAT. GPA and MCAT are obviously not the only things that matter, but it's a good way to see where your stats fall in line with a school's average accepted stats.
A big component of the determination of USNWR rankings is "reputation." Peer assessment score and residency director assessment are weighted 0.20 each (basically they survey med school deans and residency directors and ask "what do you think of this program? rate them 1 to 5") while MCAT is weighted 0.15 and GPA is weighted 0.06 in the research list and 0.045 in the primary care list. USNWR is more subjective and not a whole lot of stock is put into those rankings, yet every year pre-meds drool over the new list.
