Why does NYMC have the reputation as a back-up?

Gotcha. So what makes it more valid than USNWR?

Because it's based on data. A way to compare a school's average GPA and MCAT of accepted applicants with your GPA and MCAT. GPA and MCAT are obviously not the only things that matter, but it's a good way to see where your stats fall in line with a school's average accepted stats.

A big component of the determination of USNWR rankings is "reputation." Peer assessment score and residency director assessment are weighted 0.20 each (basically they survey med school deans and residency directors and ask "what do you think of this program? rate them 1 to 5") while MCAT is weighted 0.15 and GPA is weighted 0.06 in the research list and 0.045 in the primary care list. USNWR is more subjective and not a whole lot of stock is put into those rankings, yet every year pre-meds drool over the new list.

The 2017 match list is definitely impressive. I wish there was a better link rather than that map thing.

It's a canard. half of the school is post bacculaurette people, meaning half of the class has had 1-2 years of mock medical school. Compound this with having both in-house finals and miniboards, very inept, careless staff and faculty, respectively and the largest curriculum in the nation--both imaging and embryology are self-taught, anyone who gets based these gauntlets will be easy sitting for boards.
If you think you can be in the top 20 percent, you might as well go to other schools; if not, stay away--this is probably the most difficult medical school in the USA to graduate from.
