Why is an August AMCAS Considered a Death Sentence?

Because MD schools will have received something like 5-15000 apps by now.
Your state school will give you more slack, as will mission-based schools.

Right now, secondaries are going out, letters are being uploaded, interivew invitations are going out for interviews starting in mid-September. By the time your application is verified and your secondary is received, there are applicants queued for interviews well into November. You'll be lucky to have your application reviewed by November and by the time you are approved for interview you'll be fighting for a few interview slots at the end of the cycle. It's not like you can't get admitted if you apply in August but it is an uphill climb. (October is a death sentence unless you have postponed your application so you could include your Nobel prize that was just announced that morning.) If you are an elite applicant, you might be okay but the ordinary Joe or Jane will be left in the dust.
