Why is interventional cardiology fellowship so competitive nowadays?

There are ~250 ACGME accredited positions between the US and Canada every year. Out of those 250 positions, you probably will have half of those filled by internal candidates, who will have a much better chance at getting that seat since there is no match / ranking system. What's left is probably roughly 125 positions for about 300-400 candidates who either had no interventional fellowship in their program or had not matched in their program fighting over what is left....
