Why isn't there just an MD?

Doctor diagnose, doctor order test, doctor find out problem, doctor subscribe med, doctor give med and give instruction on how to use med.

I do not understand why there is such a thing as a PharmD? can someone explain?

If it's about QA, just give it to another doctor who is your colleague. The PharmD seems unecessary.

Is there a way to make sure that the doctor diagnosed the sickness right? is there a person for that? nooo... so why should there be a person to make sure that a doctor subscirbed the right med?

I'm pretty sure it's can be like House, the TV show. All the doctor get together as a team, and they figure out what's wrong with the dude then they AGREE what's wrong. So why can't it just be like that but take it a step further? after they AGREE that they diagnosed the sickness correctly, they also AGREE that the medicine is CORRECT too.

This make a PharmD totally unecessary. I just don't understand what the justification is!

There SHOULD just be only a MD.

But to answer your question. Yes, MD/DOs are able to do that but who will prescribe the medication? Who will coordinate and oversee treatment plans? PharmD is a more specialized field in the last 2 descriptions you stated. Doctors don't always give you the medication on the spot--that's why you go to a pharmacy.

I don't really care what reason you just gave. You're just a wana be forum hero. Your post in this thread totally cancels out your other thread about "helping/motivating" people with low GPA. Apparently, you're just trying to make a thread for attention/show off/look like a leader for other people to respect you around these forum because you got into pharmacy school.

In my experience, whenever I visit the Doctor they subscribe to a lot of things. Sometimes People, sometimes Better Homes and Gardens, sometimes Parenting or Reader's Digest, etc.

One time, this Doctor subscribed to BOTH Sports Illustrated and ESPN the Magazine. I told him about this and he was very happy I had pointed out his duplicate sports subscription. See how PharmD. is necessary?

Hi, I'm not a pre-med. I'm pre-pharmacy. I just want to understand my field deeply thank you. I'm still waiting for someone serious, mature, and knowledgable to give me a deep and perhaps a philosophical answer. My original question was rhetorical.

From most post around here from you, I can tell you're not really someone who cares about the field that much anyways. You're just somebody who is concern about money, about your job security, about how the field is saturated, about how you're not going to get a job, about how Pharmacist are paid poorly after taxes. You seem to talk very poorly of the field for materialistic reason to discourage other from going into it. Perhaps to increase your chance of getting a job? You lack the ability to answer this question.

I'm going to dismiss that answer because it is not serious. Doctor will not make a mistake THAT serious. If they were to, it could easily be prevented from a QA process where they talk to each other in a team environment.

Because when it comes to slipping up, physicians need someone to save their ass. It WAS Bach. Pharm before for the longest time, but by 2001 or so everywhere was PharmD. Also, since being an unofficial DEA proxy comes at a price, that is the price of a RPh license. Physicians screw up all of the time and 90% of the time, the doctor is never informed that he ****ed up a a PTs rx. Long story short, as of 2001 it is a law to have a PharmD, so ask you legislator and get a hobby. Unlike MD, a PharmD encompasses a scope well beyond healthcare. It encompasses law, business management, administration, etc. Oh yeah, and Pharmacists are the 2nd most trusted profession, which means pharmDs have integrity. I already have job offers. I do not have to worry about not getting a job. Unlike you I don't come on here to ask stupid questions.

You sound like an idiot. If you like MD better than get an MD. I don't really think anyone on here really cares what you think about MD or PharmD. I doubt anyone would want you as their MD or PharmD either.

99.999999% of people go into healthcare for 1) Money and 2) job security. If they tell you it's for anything else they are lying.

If you like MD better get an MD.

I don't understand why people say negative things about other professions...if you don't like it then do something else. The End.

I don't really care what people think about PharmD. As long as I am making my money that's all I care about. 😎

Chemistress gave you a good answer. I'll be a bit more specific to help you understand why there are PharmDs. From my understanding (correct me if I'm mistaken everyone), MDs take only 1-2 semesters learning about pharmacology/medication in depth whereas PharmDs spend 6-8+ semesters doing so. MDs focus more on physiology, disease, and treatment. Both are extremely important, MDs just get all the glory. 😉

To be honest, you're overreacting to them wondering if you're trolling. Take a step back, look at the posts in the last few threads and you'll see why they might think so. If that's not the case, just say so. Overreacting and calling everyone names when they have mistaken you for something you're not is bull****. If you do that in real life, then good luck in the real world.

Ughh, we're all just human in the end. I'm pretty sure whoever I beefed with at the beginning didn't mean to do it on purpose, and this was a result of some mis-communication. He or she is just human too...

Definitely. The former question is especially beneficial to men taking PDE5 Inhibitors who also want to increase the length of their eyelashes.

Not an expert on med school curriculum by any means but my understanding is that they do not get that much time to spend on pharmacology vs. the pharmacist who studies medications continuously. Their focus is diagnosing and treating--results oriented. They do not know the ins and outs of every drug. The pharmacist's knowledge of medication goes to the level where they can catch interactions between drugs or even simple things that make a big difference for the patient--like if medications should be broken into smaller, more frequent doses to make the patient more comfortable. There are also patients who do not need to see their physician frequently but do have a chronic condition where their medications need to be monitored and they can instead see the pharmacist. If you shadow a clinical pharmacist in the hospital setting, you can see how the doctor relies on the pharmacist for information and advice.

You are correct. I have a very good friend of mine that is in med school & she tells me that they spend very little time learning meds. Most of the time they learn meds in their residency programs b/c why learn about meds that they won't ever use. It's better if they learn about meds that are specific to the field. She also tells me that she loves pharmacist b/c they make her life so much easier. Just food for thought.

Well shoot, why have anything but MDs in your line of logic. Throw out all specializations and group based healthcare, make it all MDs! Those pesky nurses, PAs, optometrists, podiatrists, pharmacists and dentists all need to go. I'm sure the MDs got it all covered, just like on TV lol.

Same reason there is a MD, DDS, DO, etc. People in academia thought having a title impresses everybody. That and they can bill another year of tuition.

Let's be honest, a "doctorate" was intended to mean that the holder has acquired all of the information in a discipline that can be reasonably expected in an academic setting. The reality is that PharmDs, MDs, and DOs ae pretty much useless when they graduate. Hence, there is residency. Pharmacy and medical schools should probably result in holding a bachelor's degree. Then maybe awarding a doctorate after postgraduate training, if then.

Academia is an incredibly pretentious place...really...what do you expect? They give a person a piece of paper and expect the entirety of society to respect the title they bestowed upon them.
