Why is there such a wide range for 99th percentile MCAT scores?

521 is 99th and then anything after 523 is >99th. When evaluating applications is a 521 treated very differently from a 526, for example?

if you broke it down into more decimal places it would look like 99.1, 99.2, 9.3 etc

so few people score above 523 that it's all contained within 1% - it's at the very end of the bell curve

i would say a 526 would be treated as a 526; however, a 523 is still such a high score they practically have the same chance

Harvard only accepts people with a 523+ so if you have a 522+ you should aim for lower tier schools like WashU and Yale.

If it wasn't clear, I'm kidding
I know you're joking, but wouldn't it be more accurate: WashU only accepts people with 523+, so 522 people and below would need to aim for low tier schools like Yale and Harvard?

I think it's a relic of the old MCAT scores that gave percentiles to the decimal place, eg V 13 - 99.7th percentile.

But even then there was crazy overkill, with 41-45 just for the top 0.1%

Of course not.

Cool, I thought so too. I feel like the difference between the scores at that point is just a few questions. But I still can't help but feel there is some awe factor that comes with being at the higher end of that percentile...
Which might push candidates over the edge if it were to come down to two applicants. Or might help them if they were average in other ways.

If it comes down to two applicants, one a 99 percentile and one >99 percentile, it's not going to be about MCAT scores. They're going to be judged on ECs and interviews.

But adcoms have said that decisions aren't made like that. If you have two exceptional applicants, they'll both be accepted.

MCAT scores are like penis size. After a certain point, it ceases to matter.

MCAT sounding more and more like a penis.

Which gives some literalism for the statwhores :naughty:

And some schools are more interested in the motion of the ocean than just the size of the boat.

Can't explore the ocean without ensuring the boat meets the size and quality requirements !
