Why is University of Arkansas (UAMS) not that well known?

This network tends to bring a lot of attention to certain schools such as VCU, Drexel and other well known schools yet never mentions UAMS which in my opinion is better than both schools. UAMS has a huge campus, new buildings, a well structured curriculum, friendly environment and diverse programs. Yet, no one really talks much about the school even on this forum. I just wanted to put the schools name out and tell people that this school is a diamond in the rough so take a look at it seriously. I know they accept more instate but they have opened more slots for OOS applicants and everyone should take advantage of that. They interviewed 100 stdents out of 2800 for close to 30 some acceptances that ratio is just as good as appying to other schools. People might think Arkansas is boring i found it pretty entertaining compared to other places i have been! Either way Good luck to all future applicants.

Like most state schools, Arkansas is required to take more than 90% of their students from instate-- therefore, there's not much to discuss concerning admissions.

because no one likes the south.

That was a really random post. Would you mind telling me what your favorite brand of yogurt is, too?

Stay out of Texas. We have enough problems with Cali people infiltrating. Keep that attitude I like it!!

I dont think Cali people are responsible for the higher rates of obesity, depression, and lower IQs. And not to mention the rampant racism (in comparison to the northern states).

Its true tho, you can keep Texas. And George Bush. And Texas toast, whatever that is.

I am LOVING this! That's right we're all the stereotype you imagine. Austin as a liberal stronghold? Houston has a lesbian mayor? No way! Just a few Wal Marts down here, nothing to see. The amazing northeast with your wonderful sportsmanship in Philly and GREAT friendly attitude in NYC are the envy of all of us.

He is clearly the best person to compare every Texan to. Strikingly accurate assumption.
Read the comment I quoted then read my comment. Was I talking about comparing Rick Perry to anyone?

Reading comprehension ftw.

I wasn't stereotyping... just pointing out statistics. Why live in a fat, dumb and depressed area?

Also, a stronghold is "a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack."

so...what is attacking Austin exactly? Friendly Texans?

Yeah, that's one thing that always gets me, all this talk about how cultured and tolerant northerners/west coasters are, yet there's never any hesitation to s---talk other regions, often with the same ignorance that they accuse others of.

Great I rarely make threads and when I do it turns into a flame fest ah the immaturity on this form Jesus Christ. Why did I even bother with this.....

What did you expect, a Socratic debate on why a small school in a small state isn't talked about much? SDN isn't the Lyceum.

Maybe we can get some more giant .jpegs in here. I forgot how played out the pre-Allo reddit crew is. Who needs actual content in their posts anyways? Also lets keep the fake Texas stats coming, because Cali has ZERO problems with obesity and their public schools are amazing, no?

I think Oklahoma and Arkansas are similar in that there is only 1 MD school for the whole state. Most people that go there are instate. Also, they have smaller populations.

Also, I moved from Texas to Illinois, and frankly racism is more conspicuous here than it is in Texas. Not everyone north of the Mason-Dixon line is enlightened and superior as you seem to suggest.

But carry on.

Chicago is the most segregated city in the Union 🙁

Long-time residents can tell you precisely the make-up of each "quadrant" of the city and probably be right to within a couple of percentage points.

Exactly. Chicago isn't exactly an accurate representation of northern cities. 😉

I just finished with my North Dakota interview and it's a similar situation. Great school, but I guess you'd call it a 'stronghold' against out-of-state applicants.

To continue with the clever 'diamond in the rough' analogy for Arkansas (I saw what you did there), I'd have to say North Dakota is like discovering a hidden oilpatch. 🙂

It really is a pity that these great schools are forced to shun away OOS applicants for whatever the reason legislative or not.

No it's not. These states are facing physician shortages and need as many to remain in the state as possible. Unfortunately the state school from my state (also the only one in the state) is trying to accept 40% OOS for the extra tuition money. Though, I'm from a pretty desireable state, so maybe they figure it will work out. Not sure North Dakota or Arkansas fit that category (never been, just a guess).

Wow are you arrogant. I'm new here but I hope that you will please stop hijacking threads with your passive-aggressive attacks... Anyway, yes many northern cities are more segregated than southern ones (see, I said that without being on a high horse).

While we're here:

1. 😍 Texas. Seriously, I think I might live here someday (I'm OOS)

2. What do people think of Florida and its schools?

Just like a few cities in the south (even states) aren't valid representations of the entire region. The south isn't some Wild West that many northerners (especially those on the east coast) seem to think it is where we call African Americans "negros," carry guns everywhere, and ride our horses to the nearby saloon.

Sht, that sounds like the life right there....100% srs.

Then you should come to Montana. We are what most folks imagine Texas was like. Any dude ranch would be happy to set you up with a week or two experience in 'the life right there'. Even the Marlboro ranch you always see in the cigarette ads is located here.

What in the world happened to this thread?

Awsome study break, will check back in a few hours for this gem. now...........proceed!!!!!

As others have said, it really isn't a shame. Most of these schools that mainly take IS students are for two reasons:

1. Taxpayer money is invested in residents of the actual state.
2. MUCH more likely to see the states investment realized if they pick a primarily IS class, as IS students are more likely to stay in the state.

It's pretty obvious, CA has a glut of students. While they probably are "qualified" candidates, GPA/MCAT wise, they are a million times more likely to go back to California or out west after medical school or residency. The biggest priority in those states is to train physicians who will stay and practice in physician sparse areas. The schools, while probably concerned about it, aren't focused on rankings. Public's schools that allow more OOS usually are, or just see the benefit of having more students paying OOS.

Again, I am sure U or A is a great school, but it's primary mission is to train doctors that stay in Arkansas. Not to churn out doctors who go on to work in research centers in big name medical centers in big cities (not in Arkansas).

screw these ignorant yanks. up north is the most racism I've ever experienced. Let them continue to think that their schools are better and pay triple what we pay for school and housing and let them continue to get the same education. It does make sense that they're bitter, I mean they do have to live in the cold weather most of the year

 How naive do you think the rest of the world is? I can only hope that was hyperbole.

Wonderful and insightful opening remark my good fellow. Based on it I immediately was prepared for an intelligent and logical statement as opposed to one based on emotion. You have done well in adjusting my views.

/sarcasm 🙄
