I swear I tried using the search function and have looked at the pages on this forum as well as the IM forum. I found some threads but they were old, i.e. 2002.

Do invites for IM prelim programs come a lot later than anesthesia interview invites? I applied to 10 and have not received any. Most of them are in California.

I am worried because I just used my anesthesia personal statement (my school said it would be ok). Now that I think about it, I'm worried this could be viewed as lazy. Should I modify it and resubmit one more tailored to IM?

Thanks!

California prelim IM spots are very competitive, especially community hospital programs. I would apply to many more. I don't think the personal statement is the issue.

I see your location is San Diego; if you are at UCSD PM me.

Agreed. All the IM prelims are proving to be more difficult to get interviews than the anesthesiology programs. Hopefully wont have to scramble into a surgical prelim.

I'm having the same problem. I have 15 gas interviews lined up , 0 prelim medicine and transitional year interviews.
I also used the same PS for both. I tried to change around the last paragraph to personalize it for prelim programs, but it just wound up looking worse than the original.
I'm going to wait till after deans letters come out on 11/1, and see what happens. Might apply to some more and maybe a few surgery prelims <ugh>

I also applied to prelims (med, surg, TY) in CA only. Lots of them. I.e., all the ones in the Bay Area, LA, and SD. AFAIK at least half of these haven't sent out any interviews. So, no worries.

I applied to 10 TYs and 10 prelim med. The TY interviews came in much earlier, and I pretty much got an interview from everyone of them (probably because they are all midwest programs) and actually went to 3 of the interviews already.

I only got a couple prelim med ones back, so I think med programs rely much more on the MSPE. They'll probably flood interviews after Nov. 1. I am going to just go to 6 TY interviews and call it a day (just withdraw all my prelim meds ones). Its not tough because they are all short driving distance plus they are relatively short interviews. From what I was told, prelim med/surgery spots are relatively easy to match especially since there are so many spots for 1 year slave labor.

BTW I used the same carbon copy anesth PS for my TY/prelim programs... so don't even stress about that. Plus all the interviews I went to didn't even seem to have read my PS to begin with.

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the advice. And I did get an email from a SoCal prelim program that said they will start sending out interviews after the Dean's letter comes out.

Prelim IM are tricky. Tough to get them even if you are an excellent candidate for anesthesia on paper. I personally believe that they interview people based on location (if you are from east coast or midwest, CA is harder). I send some emails "asking" whether my application is complete while dropping off hints like "my family is SF/LA/SD" line or "I will be visiting UC-- and hope to coordinate my travel."

Personal statement for gas is fine for IM as long as you don't say things like "I like all my patient be quiet and paralyzed."

But beware of prelim meds in CA. Not all prelim meds are created equal. Some programs in SF had 10+month of q4 call.
