small class size, good didactics (basic sciences with the med school), lots of patients that can afford to do some fancy work and patients that can't afford fancy work (so you can do a little of everything). also, we start with patients in oct/november of our 2nd year, much earlier than most schools. price is right if you are or become a ny resident.
i'm just starting my first year and so far, so good!
Yes we start clinic 2nd year. We just received the names of our first two patients. We need to give them a call sometime in the next month and hopefully get them in on November 12. That's our first day with patients.
We start more complicated procedures probably in Dec-Jan.
Stony Brook has an elite program and I really hope I get accepted into it. It is also my number one choice.
Are you an NY resident???
How favorable is this school for out of staters. Thanks in advance.

i know stony brook is very hard to get into, with applicants needing extremely high stats, but does that mean the school is the best?
is SBU better than schools such as columbia, upenn, and other big named schools?
It seems to me that SBU has high stats because a lot of dental students go there for the cheap tution

Is there a Kathy G in your class?
yes no?
There are no big name dental schools. The ivies give you lots of research exp and opportunities to specialize. The didactics are strong there. If you are looking for a solid clinical education I would rank SB above the ivies.
Unless a class divides up into small groups for a day, we are always together. It hasn't been bad yet. Just get to be good friends with 5-10 people and you'll be set. You end up being friends with most (if not all) of your classmates anyhow.
We each got our first 2 patients but we haven't contacted them yet. The first visit will be taking a med/dental history and performing a simple head/neck exam. As long as we pass our competencies we can begin taking x-rays and doing operative procedures. You could get lucky and start out with a simple class III #8 M or you could get the dreaded pin amalgam. I'll cross my fingers.

Look man, by all means take all the pin amalgam cases from your classmates and make them happy. But let me tell you - I would FAR rather have a class III #8 M than a pin amalgam on my first patient. Pin amalgams are pretty bad to have to do because you'd rather the patient have a crown (but obvs they can't afford it). You'll have plenty of challenging things to do while you're at d-school, and basic restorations won't be among them.Hey the pin amalgam is way more fun than the easy class III #8 M. You should want a challenge (I know you want the good grades), but when else are you going to learn. Only way to learn is through practice, and better you jump right inn then just get your feet wet and realize just how cold the water is. IMO anyways, maybe i am wrong. I want to get into Stonybrook so bad though and its killing me that i havent heard from them yet.
hey whats up everyone just got accepted to stonybrook class of 2014😀😀im thinking about commuting to the school about an hour each day from home....can anyone comment on that.......will those lost hours be valuable time?
