why so many FA apps?

I just don't get it!? Why do we need to fill out the exact same info for FAFSA and then for the school that we got into and then for the CSS profile? I'm not complaining, I'm just honestly curious, why not have 1 app for everything??

I honestly do not understand the point of CSS other than a extra lines in comparison to FAFSA. I had to do it for several private schools for undergraduate, it must be a money maker. Maybe Tufts cut out a secret deal 😀. Too bad CSS isn't free.
