So what questions are people allowed to post on here without being ridiculed or being told that they are just "stupid". I've read so many threads where someone asks a perfectly understandable question and then immeditally gets slammed by others. Let me just remind you that there was a day when all of us didn't know much about med-school or becomming a doctor. We all had to start somewhere. There was a time when you first came to this thread and thought "cool, I can have all my questions answered." That is the point of this place, am I right? Just because you already know the answer to a question does not mean that everyone does and that doesn't make them stupid. I just don't understand why so many people on here think they know it all. Most of you are PRE-MED. A lot of you don't even know if you're going to be accepted to medical school yet, so stop acting like you are already doctors if you're not. If you think someone's question is dumb then why not just ignore it and move on to the next thread? Chances are you asked a "dumb" question or two in your day. Everyone needs to take a step back and remember that once they knew nothing too.

u are absolutely right! and don't worry about the holier-than-thou immaturity that sometimes exists on this board. a lot of these pre-meds are ppl who think they are smarter than everybody else, or have wierd egos where they always have to be right and get into crazy nitpicky arguments.

thankfully, there are also plenty of wise, nice people on sdn that will offer you good support and advice. so ask away!

It isn't so much stupidity as laziness that bothers many of us. Put a little effort into finding the answer before posting. Most new people don't and it just annoys some of us.

The only stupid question is the one not asked! I don't think SDNer's dislike stupid questions as much as they dislike stupid comments such as "If I couldn't be a cardiologist I wouldn't even bother becomming a doctor or I have wanted to be a cardiologist since I was born!! I know I won't change." Think before you speak because everyone will read your posts.

i agree that there should be less inflammatory language on this board. we are all working towards learning more about the premed profession and thats a good thing. but still, its really annoying to see threads with questions that would easily have been answered with a little use of the search function. it ends up being the same thing over and over.

I agree fully with this!

i was thinking the same thing. Also those threads where people ask hypothetical questions and are told they're going to make horrible doctors for it. people just need to chill and just answer the question or move on.

but i'm not going to lie, those "what are my chances with a 3.9 40 mcat" threads do get old pretty quick 🙂

The majority of the question that illicits negative responses from people on this board seems to be related to "What are my Chances (I have a 3.90...would have been a 4.0 but my prof hates my guts and got a 33 on the MCAT)?...I am a high school fresman and should I start studying for the MCATs already?" Now, questions like these are very frequent and somewhat inane so, post those at your own risk,

In my experience, the majority of the people here are more than ready to help out. But questions like the ones I mentioned above gets people. Especially with the recent influx on high school trolling.

And honestly, I think some of the questions are better discussed with an advisor or something. But last but not least, I'll address your issue with skipping over threads you don't want to see which can be boiled down to: If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Later.

I'll refer you to the "Magic wand make these go away" thread for this one.

For me, it is especially irritating if a question can be answered by any of the following:

1. Google (web and SDN search)
2. MSAR
3. Common fvcking sense

Agreed. Asking a question is one thing. Asking a question that can EASILY be answered with an MSAR or with google is another. Also, we aren't here to fluff up your low self-esteem. If you have a 4.0 and a 38 MCAT, asking what your chances are is seen as a form of gloating, and it is annoying.

Absolutely.

I couldn't agree more.

Back prior to the May 15th deadline, I think I once saw 3 different threads asking about the specifics of the deadline ON THE FRONT PAGE ALONE. If someone can't atleast search the front page for what they're looking for, their laziness deserves to be poked fun at.

By the way, I first read this thread expecting to hear about people's encounters with the admissions office staff. Each school I've called to kindly check on their progress has dished me a heaping plate of rudeness. I realize i'm the 43rd applicant to call today, but don't blame it on me.

I was going to post with the same question! It puzzles me to think that so many rude people want to get into a career that requires helping people.

I agree 100%.

Things that annoy me the most are questions easily answered by Google, New Threads about the exact same thing as a thread farther down the first page or on the second page of Pre-Allo.

TIP: If you don't want to get sarcastic answers, lurk for literally 1 single hour and you will learn the dynamics of SDN enough to know what to post and what not to post.

My greatest pet peeve is the "which is more important?" series of threads. As if one can expect to treat MCAT or GPA or something similar as unimportant. Please...

The OP has a very good point. It is fairly contradictory for people to write a long-winded PS expounding how passionate they are about helping people and then come in here to ridicule others who are seeking help.

I understand that some people are joking around or some questions seem absurd. I agree with you that people should look into using the MSAR, Search feature or similarly Google their way towards finding similar threads, however... I still think responders could direct them to this route with a little more kindness than they have been. Some people didn't know there was an MSAR, some people didn't see the Search feature, etc.

Sure, it can be annoying, but at the same time you are going to have patients one day that ask the same questions or have the same afflictions as a previous patient and you won't say to them, "Well I know you're having trouble breathing but maybe you should use your brain and google your symptoms before you come in to the hospital. That's why Google was invented."

For example, I would consider this a nice response:

"Hello! You'll likely find a lot of great information if you check out the Search feature above... it will save you time too since people will have already responded at length to past threads! Good luck!"

Anyway, just a suggestion.

I agree with many of the previous posters that "what are my chances thread if i have a 4.0 and 40 MCAT?" do get annoying...or in the MCAT forum those asking if they should retake the MCAT if they got a 34. However, some can be rude. I remember a loooong time ago I posted my PS and wanted to get opinions on it;some people were really rude and told me how much I sucked, it was sooo boring, etc. I'm ALL for constructive criticism and I do admit my PS wasn't the best and needed A LOT of work, but geez! At least now they have a sticky for people who are willing to read your PS and you can PM/e-mail them (great idea by the way!) Overall, I think after being here for awhile you do learn more about the dynamics of the forum, searching before you post, etc.

Why in god's name should it bother you if someone doesn't look up the answer to something first? If you're not interested, DON'T READ IT.

lol I love the sarcasm on SDN! I know some people have trouble recognizing between sarcasm and rudeness, but it's something you have to get used to on these boards.

I've only gotten helpful responses to all of my questions, and I have to agree with the above posters that it is slightly annoying when people ask simple questions about certain schools when all they have to do is go to the schools website and look for themselves. 🙄

In no particular order, I am rude to the folks who ask questions like the following:

- Compare X to Y school (especially b/t two really high powered schools, which seems more like bragging than a plea for help)

- What are my chances? (again, a chance to brag)

- Searchable questions or questions that can be answered using a MSAR. Seriously, as Bluntman said, have the patience to lurk for an hour and you'll find your answer for 90+% of the time.

- Questions that imply dishonesty on the part of the poster. For example, "What did you say your weakness was?" which in my mind, is like asking "What answer did you put down for #12?" during a test.

- Questions lacking common sense and/or are inherently insulting (e.g. "Applying for MD after DO?" which says MD > DO, or the poster has no idea of the time and $ that path would be.)

- "I should have got X" posts, where X = a grade on a test, class, or a med school acceptance. Nobody is entitled to anything, regardless of MCAT, grades, daddy moneybags, whatever. People who work hard and work smart sometimes get rewarded. That's it.

FYI: There was an initiative presented to Lee in the Donors Forum to make a 24 Hour Trial period for new posters which would limit starting new threads but not posting in current threads in an effort to curb trolling/spam.

I'd say make it like 3 days or a week.

Gimme a break on the 'look it up first' argument. Everyone knows that the answers are there SOMEWHERE. The problem is sifting through 2300 threads each with 600 responses, which takes freakin' hours sometimes. I've done it on several occassions and still never found what I was looking for. Maybe I'm a crappy researcher, but so?

The whole point to a forum like this is the sharing of knowledge and ideas so that each and every one of us doesn't have to re-invent the pinche wheel every time we have a question.

Naturally, there are gonna be those jackballs that ask lame questions but I think that roasting someone for being ignorant is far more irritating. And THAT is my totally unsolicited two cents. 😀

Most of the time when people are asked to "look it up first", it's not a labor intensive task. Sometimes, I type a phrasing of the OP's question into google, and the very first page that comes up has the answer they want. Often from the AAMC website. Is it asking too much for you to do a 30 second google search rather than post the same question that has been asked and answered many times?

It would make more sense to do the opposite: allow starting new threads, but not posting in others' threads for 24 hours. This way you eliminate thread usurpation by vitriolic throwaway-account trolls.

"Well let's see, a 38 on the MCAT is pretty much 99th percentile, and a 4.0 is the highest GPA possible... hmmm... no, you won't get in, you should have studied harder, particularly in STATISTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Newbie hazing is inevitable anywhere. It takes time to acclimate. Vets should be more understanding, and newbies should use search more often.

Sounds like a good idea, I've seen other forums use it, I think effectively. Annoying though when you're new--but in retrospect it was probably for the best

yea, i agree, i was tempted to start a new thread concerning a fin aid question, but decided to use the search function under the fin aid section first. i got what i wanted on the first try, from a thread early last year.

searching isn't a skill obtained after experience on sdn. if you're a college student who doesn't know how to search for stuff on this internet, that's pretty bad.

seriously...I don't understand this at all. If someone doesn't want to answer the question don't look at it! it takes less effort to push the back button and look at someone else's thread than to post something rude.

What a stupid thread. 😡

Because coddling and being accepting to some of the people that post annoying threads will only encourage them to post more annoying threads. You might not have liked it holliester, but I bet you learned a lesson didnt you?

What if nobody said anything to these people and the first 3 pages were spammed with the same questions over and over?(which isnt too far from what happens sometimes here) 80 percent of the questions asked could be answered by just looking at the stickied thread at the top. When I had very few posts, I wouldnt have understood this concept either. After being on here for a while, you may begin to understand.

Yup. It's self-governance at its finest.

Everyone makes a stupid post or two when they're a noob. You get yelled at for it, and then you learn. Or you pitch a hissy fit about how people are rude and leave. Either way, the quality of the board improves.

I agree with the thread on the rudeness factor sometimes. We're going into people-oriented altruistic careers and we can be so cold to each other. What, are other doctors/medical professionals not people? xD

No justification to the immaturity here, but you're going to find self-righteousness among individuals regardless in life. If you don't have tough skin, you may want to reconsider medicine.

The next time someone complains about how "you're not supposed to make new threads but bumping old ones gets people mad at you!" I want to show them this. Bumping old threads with relevant questions for current users is what should be done, not making pointless posts that don't contribute anything.
