What are the primary, secondary, etc. reasons for pursuing a career as a dentist? How much motivation is from the enjoyment of doing extractions, root canals, implants, etc.?

Dear Hope7,
The satisfaction lies not in the extraction or RCT but in the fact that you are putting your energies in relieving a person's pain and ofcourse the bucks you are making out of it.2 in 1.
Fasiha.

dear friends,

i think having bucks is secondery thing. treating patients, killing there pains and getting word of thanks is a real pleasure

Dear doctor,
You got me wrong.I am not saying that making money is the real thing.I just wanted to say that if you are doing something saintly like healing and getting paid for that too, isn't it great.

Dear friend,
I think the best way to figure out whether you are really motivated to be a dentist is by going and seeing how a dentist works, his daily routine from 9 to 5 or whatever and then deciding whether you would like to don the same cap or not.

You find your niche and it feels go to do something well.
I get more satisfaction from doing a well done extraction on a patient that came in with tremendous pain, than just about anything else.
You become part artist, part magician, part physician. People knock dentistry all the time, but most don't know what they'd do without dentists. Ever hear the expression "We mock what we don't understand."
The art of dentistry is making the difficult look common place so that the patient walks out saying..."I can't believe I payed so much, the doctor barely touched me!" 😉

I believe snhate is on target. I have a daughter starting dental school this fall. As far as I can tell, her motivation derives primarily from the fact that she just flat out enjoys the work. She was introduced to the field while in high school where she persued a combination college prep/voc skill (dental assistant) program. She has been fascinated with the field of dentistry since that day.

I love dentistry. And my patients can tell that I love my job as well. Many snobs in medicine look down on dentistry. I think that is THEIR problem. I am motivated to help people and this is the direction that GOD pointed me in for doing it. I work for a community health clinic in a low income area in a Major city. I recently was appointed director of the dental portion of this large facility and I enjoy it everyday. I mainly get people out of emergency pain, make dentures for old retirees and pull a bombed out tooth hear and there. But I love every minute of it. I think I can do this another 20 years no problem....Good luck to anybody entering the field.

i love it 🙂 it gives u selfsatisfaction when u manage dealing with a pts pain a kind of humanity i guess besides it has an artistic type of skills which gets out energy u would never feel it better try it 😀
