why's drexel's class size so big?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Drexel is what used to be Hanneman University School of Medicine and the Medical College of PA. It is a real long story but what happened is that the two schools merged and then Drexel took them over because their hospitals were purchased by Tenet (a for profit hospital corp).

Can their facilities handle that many students and how does it affect the overall experience from the student? Any experiences/ideas?
Thnx

I think that the class size of Drexel is a very positive asset of the school. It provides for lots of diversity among the student body and many different people to get to know. At some smaller med schools, everybody knows everybody else's business- this is not so at Drexel. Even though the class is large relative to other schools, there is definitely a cohesiveness among the students. Furthermore, since there are two different curriculum tracts that students can choose, rarely are all of the students together at once.
I have not noticed any problems with the facilities not being adequate for the class. During lectures and tests, they open up additional rooms for students to go to where they can either watch the lecture, or take a test. In Gross lab, the maximum number of people to a cadaver is 6 people and this is actually most desirable since dissecting is a lot of work and very time consuming. We also have a lot of small group conferences so that you can get the small-group atmosphere if you want it. Finally, Drexel is in the process of reducing it's class size. Last year they shrunk the class by 25 people, and I believe they will be shrinking it even more this year. I think that this will be a good thing for the school only because it will make it even more competitive in the scrutinous eyes of pre-meds.

Drexel is a great school and should definitely be considered strongly by those applying!

Thanks for the information, you really helped clear up my questions.

What ever happened to Drexel losing its hospital? I heard they lost a large portion of its hospital (the one near campus I believe).

The hospital near campus is (or was) MCP Hospital. It's called something else now, as a doctor's group bought it from Tenet earlier this year and is now operating it. It doesn't really affect the medical school. The primary teaching hospital is Hahnemann Hospital (which is having no problems), and also a new affiliate hospital, Abington Memorial.
