I am a non-traditional TN resident. Born & raised in MI, the wife is from Montana. We would like to go to a west coast wiche school fall of 2003. Should I pack up my bags and move to MT (and live w/ the inlaws)so that I can apply as a WICHE student? (is this even possible: my application will say I have been a resident of MT for like a week. However, by the time dental school starts up I will have lived there for a year.) I know that the WICHE program will give me an advantage to the schools I'd most like to go to. How will WICHE adcoms view this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

This link should answer all your questions...and more. The WICHE program is a good one, but I do know that they still limit the amount of WICHE people they use. The U of Wa for example, only has to keep open a few med spots (5 I think), for ALL the WICHE applicants. So, there is still a lot of competition. Still, my hubby is from Montana and i think any reason you have for moving there, would be good. 🙂
Maybe though, you would have even better luck if you are applying to a state school, to actually move to the state the school is in...since you are moving anyways? Again, U of WA accepts the majority of its class from WA....which is even a greater number then its WICHE spots.
Good luck regardless....enjoy Montana....hubby is from Proctor/Polson area.

I am from a western state and I will be applying for school this year with WICHE status. I know this program will only increase my chances of being accepted. Anyways, I am not sure if moving to Montana will help, I believe there are some strict rules for obtaining WICHE status. I have kept my home state residency for several years while attending an out-of-state university. Because of this I had to prove my residency status by showing where and when I have filed taxes, driver's license # and expiration date, the last time I voted, etc.. They really wanted to know if I still qualify as a state resident. After doing all this I am not positive if you would qualify for WICHE status. Try it and see what happens though, I know it is going to help me! Good luck!
