i shadowed an omfs last week at his office (met him thru my dr at work) and he asked me what school i wanted to go to.i mentioned uop and ucsf and he went on to tell me how he went to uop for undergrad and dental school and he loved it..this guy was very into the school which i found nice..anyways i mentioned to my dr at work how he recommended that i go to uop etc..apparently the omfs donates a huge amount of money every year to uop his alma matter and is well up to date with the school...would his LOR help me? i dont want to sound ingnorant but with not a competive gpa compared to eveyone else-im looking all the help i can get with apps etc!

why not?! milk the connections that you've got! Assuming you are applying next cycle, I would do LOTS of hours shadowing this OMFS before you ask for the LOR. This way he really knows you and will be more comfortable writing your LOR. If you want his help, you need to put in the effort.

Remember though, dont just drop the GP shadowing cus most dental schools want shadowing from a general dentist and not a specialist.

Anyway, who knows if the LOR will help or not. if you dont do it, you will always wonder "what if". It won't hurt you, so it can only help you. im jealous

Go for it! (with the advice above provided by crooked castle in mind)

i agree w/ above posters, milk the connection!
however, don't expect it to tip over the balance for you. I think tihs kind of letter will work in your favor if they have already interviewed you and is in the final process of sending out acceptances, where you and another applicant has scored similarily in interview/gpa/dat, a letter like this may help you.
However, don't expect it to be your way in. Keep working hard, kill GPA, kill DAT then with a letter from this dude, you are golden

thanks. i actually really like working with this surgeon and he's well known in the community for being so easy to approach and work with...guy went to harvard also (believe he did the 6 year md route)

anyways-i do want to shadow him as much as i can but i just hope it wont get too repetitive and that i dont overstay my welcome. between him and the gp i have about 20 hrs of shadowing in and need 100 more. def looking for a third dentist as well..

would 30hrs at his office be too much? im there once a week for 4hrs a day and i cant help with anything (already ask) so i literally spend the day just following him around and stuff-hes sweet and all- i just dont want him to get sick of me!

sidenote-my gpa is at a 2.7 and im trying to ace my classes to bring it up this semester and next semester before applying!

Hmm, I think it would be a great LOR; however, he cannot personalize it towards UOP, because the LOR goes to every school you apply to. That probably means you'll get rejected from every school other then UOP (and that may not be a guarantee with your GPA). Hmm...I guess it couldn't hurt, but you shouldn't personalize it to one school.
