Some schools require biochemistry. Do any of you know if bioorganic chemistry fits that requirement? We use the exact same book as the biochemistry students and so far the only thing our professor asks that is different is about the stereochemistry of various molecules.

What a pretentious name for biochemistry. It actually depends, in my opinion. Does the course replace organic chemistry, or is it taken afterwards? Do you learn metabolic pathways, or do you learn how to draw sugars? Do you learn how RNR, Pol, and other enzymes work, or how to draw DNA?

Everytime you said draw I assumed extract...until I realized what you were getting at:laugh:.

And I would simply ask the professor/school if it does satisfy those requirements. SOMEONE in the department should have an answer

Organic I and II are actually a pre requisite for the course. I decided to take it because I love Organic ( I know I'm wierd), and I thought it would prepare me for Biochemistry in medical scchool. So far its literally the exact same thing as the other biochemistry class. We're talking about regulatory enzymes and how they work at the moment. There is some drawing of molecules but the bulk of the last exam I took was actually more like biology type questions.

I will call my schools admissions office as they require Biochemistry for medical school.

In Florida the answer is yes. Bioorganic Chem can substitute Biochem. I also loved Organic and took the plain biochem and regretted it afterward. Do what you love and fack the consequences. Though there shouldn't be any consequences really. Cheers.

It will not count, if you ask me. It didn't at my school, at least. Bioorganic chemistry is the organic chemistry (reaction mechanisms, stereochem, etc etc.) of metabolic pathways. Biochemistry deals with the metabolic pathways themselves, the free energy, enzyme kinetics (michelson-menton) etc. Bioorganic is an organic chemists approach to metabolic pathways in biology, while biochemistry is more of a general chemist's approach to biological pathways. I think this makes them different classes altogether.

I just got in touch with UF's admissions office and they said it will satisfy the requirements for Biochemistry. I don't know about other schools though.

You will probably need to call the schools and ask. I don't think it would be a problem but you never know. If it doesn't you can always just take another biochem class afterwards. Assuming you're at UF I'd take the advanced biochem (CHM 4034) over the med school biochem.

Hello~

Now that it seems like more medical schools are requiring Biochemistry as a pre-requisite before matriculating, I thought I would bump this old thread to solicit more thoughts.

I'm in kind of an odd situation. I finished my undergraduate studies a couple of years ago, and am currently enrolled in graduate school. While in graduate school, I audited an undergraduate Biochemistry course for personal enrichment purposes. Because I was preparing for my comprehensive exams at the time, taking that course for a grade would have been a terrible idea. I then took Bio-organic chemistry for a grade the following semester and did very well.

Recently, my school's pre-med advisors sent out an e-mail to students saying that they very strongly recommend us to take Biochemistry before applying. I am wondering if I should go back and take Biochemistry for a grade, or if my Bio-organic chemistry course will suffice.

I know this is likely to be one of those school-specific issues, but I was wondering if anyone else has already had similar experiences with trying to have Bio-organic chemistry fulfill the Biochemistry requirement, or have queried some medical schools.

Thanks. 🙂

How are your GPAs looking? If you could use a great grade in a BCPM class... then do it.

Contact the schools you wish to apply to... take the biochem if necessary. Best of luck! :luck:

Thanks for your reply CodeBlu. My GPA is low enough such that I should strongly consider taking Biochem. 😉
