Hi all, I've been a long time lurker and decided to finally make an account to hopefully get a few questions answered. I apologize if this has been asked before, but I did a fairly thorough search and couldn't find anything relevant. Anyway:

Does VMCAS only count traditional classes in your GPA? My undergrad offers grades, in addition to credit, for both undergraduate research and being a teaching assistant. They're both technically classes that I can enroll in--so when I'm making my schedule, I can enroll in Undergraduate Research in X Subject and I'll get 1-6 credits, depending on what my PI decides. There is an option to either get a letter grade or take the "class" pass/fail--the PI I work for (I started halfway through this past semester so was unable to enroll for credit, but I will be next semester) has told me he gives letter grades. I'm also looking into TAing a class next year, and the professor for that class says she offers 3 credits and a letter grade to all her undergraduate TAs.

So I know my undergrad itself will count these grades as part of the GPA listed on my transcript, but what I'm wondering is if vet schools will accept these grades as part of my GPA as that's really the only GPA that matters to me. I know both these experiences are helpful regardless and I'm not asking this to determine whether I'd still do them or not, but whether or not they count would impact what other classes I take in the future when trying to balance work load/credit load/etc.

Thanks so much! I appreciate any help you can give me. If you need clarification on something please let me know, I'm not entirely sure if this is normal for most colleges?

Each school calculates GPA's in their own unique magical ways. Some schools only care about the GPA of the pre-requisite coursework, some care about everything all together, some just science classes, and some just the classes you had in the last 45 credits-worth of semesters. And some schools use combinations of the above GPA's. All that to say, if it shows up on your transcript and affects your cumulative GPA then yes, some schools will incorporate it.

Okay great, thank you! So basically it'd likely just end up acting as a regular class, and would count towards my cumulative and my last 45 if it falls within that.
