Will I be on call during 3rd and 4th year rotations? How much probably depends on the rotation right? It seems like I've heard they can make you be on call as much as they want to because there are no limits like their are in residency. My son will be 3 years old during my third year and my husband travels a couple times a month with his job. I do not have child care for the nights he is out of town and I would be on call. Does anyone out there have a working/traveling husband?

If your rotating in a hospital 3rd and 4th year...YES...usually that is part of it, but you can switch with other classmates or students in the rotation...

You will at some time be required to take call...but no program relies on the medical student, therefore there is lots of flexibility.
Call is part of medical training, it is ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Our school does not require its students to take call during 3rd-4th year rotations. Some consider it a bonus; I consider it a detriment.

As a result, I plan on scheduling many electives that do require call. Not because I'm a glutton for punishment, but because you can learn a lot on call and it helps prepare you for the rigors of internship/residency.

Don't punish yourself too badly on voluntary call rotations. I really didn't learn much at 3 a.m. when writing admission orders and doing an H&P for an IM/ICU pt. I just wanted to get a couple of hours sleep and not dwell over a "great teaching case."

I'm not talking about Q2 or Q3 call. Maybe Q6. That way I'll get about 4-5 call nights for the month.

I think it depends on what rotation (surgery, rads, etc.) you're doing and where you are doing it (level I or II, big city, small town, etc.) in regards to how much you'll get to see and learn on call.

I think it depends on the hospital and the service you are on....I took call for ob/gyn, surgery, medicine...but it was all low key...and like q4/q5 which is not bad at all...and nothing beats the "I am post call day off..."

I took extra call just for the next day off...it looked good..and I got a free day..I loved it
