Already did a WAMC for DO, but I just took another practice MCAT and finally broke out of the teens and scored a 520, this is my seventh with 5 of the 7 scoring in the high 5teens.

I was just wondering if any schools would be interested in me with a pretty low gpa at 3.25 and a high MCAT around 520. decent ECs 1000hrs patient contact, some shadowing, some leadership etc. I'm already going to apply broadly to DO, but my gpa dropped and wanted to know if I should bother filling out the AMCAS with that low of a gpa.

Thanks!

You've taken the MCAT 7 times? With multiple scores in the 510 range? MCAT isn't holding you back... Post bacc would be way more beneficial

Practice MCATs not the real thing.

I could do a post bacc, but I was looking to not have to take a gap year or anything. I'm hoping that at least one DO would accept me this coming cycle and I wouldn't have to apply again or do a post bacc or SMP. My main concern was if I'd get any attention with my current stats applying the coming cycle. Or if I would just be rejected pre secondary from the majority of schools.

Oops. Misread. You should try to bring your GPA up. 3.25 is pretty low for MD but if you have some interesting EC you might get a bite or two. DO you're fine.

Yeah, nothing super interesting, spend most of my free time working as a Nurse's aide in a hospital. I'm just having a hard time deciding whether iI want to drop $500+ on schools to maybe think about looking at me when I'm pretty solid for most DO schools.

Your MCAT will likely be pretty strong when you actually take it but your GPA is seriously going to be holding you back from most MD schools. You would have a good shot at DO schools but without bringing up that GPA you're going to have a hard time getting into an MD school.

What practice MCATs have you been using? Which one did you score a 520 on?

If you score 520+ on the MCAT and have a few thousand hours as a CNA, I have to imagine doors will open for you.

My advice would be.... Take the MCAT, see how it goes. If you score 517+, personally I would probably take a year to do an SMP or GPA repair postbac and then apply only to MD schools the following cycle. If the score is =<516, apply broadly to DO and MD this coming cycle.

The 3 AAMC 2015 practice tests, pre-2015 AAMC practice test number 8, and the rest are from Kaplan 7 book set. 520 was on the AAMC 2015 practice test 2.

The thing is, is that I really really don't want to have to take an extra year to do something. I know my GPA is bad, but I was told if I apply broadly with a decent MCAT, I'd be a shoe in for DO schools. So, with my gpa and a 517+ it's still going to be a uphill battle going into the wind for MD schools?

A 3.25 GPA is still pretty low, it would be in the bottom 10th percentile for most MD schools. If you are really intent on MD, I would suggest you look into a SMP or something to bring up your GPA. You may be getting screened out at some MD schools with that GPA.

Are you in a rush? If not, take some extra time to boost that GPA. Nothing wrong with DO school. But you also need to understand what you are signing up for. DO school is not med school for people who couldn't/didn't go MD. There's a whole set of principles and shenanigans you'll deal with.

If you haven't graduated yet, consider spending another year in college and take classes, science or otherwise, to boost that GPA. If you have graduated, consider an SMP.
