I'm writing because I just took my DAT and am wondering if I should retake the test. I have a 3.5 cum. and a 3.6 science, but I am a Psych Major.
Here are my scores:
Pat: 20
QR:17
Verb: 20
BIO: 20
Gchem: 25
Ochem: 21
TS: 21
AA:21
I'm worried because a lot of schools have a cut off at 17, so should I retake the test?
Now, for the breakdown:
I used only the Kaplan blue book to study. I felt Kaplan prepared me for everything except the QR. Kaplan did not stress trigonometry, and I didn't bother to study it much. However, for the actual DAT, you're going to need to know your trignometry.
Before I took the real DAT here are my AA and Natural Science (NS) averages for the Kaplan DATs:
Diagnostic: 19.
Midterm: AA: 19.2, NS: 18.7
Test 2: AA: 19.7, NS: 17.2
I took a break from tests at this point and I focused on getting through studying the material. The next test I took after having studied all the material.
Test 3: AA: 19, NS: 18.1
Test 4/Online Final Take Home: AA: 21, NS: 20
Test 5: AA: 22.6, NS: 23.7
Now, for the actual DAT. I was not shocked about any of my scores except QR. Now, I felt the ONE section that kaplan did not prepare you well enough was the QR section. Kaplan did not stress the Trig as much as it should have - the actual DAT had at least 6-8 Trig questions on it - pooh
. I felt taht Kaplan did a good job on everything else - I also felt that for bio - there is only so much you can do to study for it, cuz there is SO MUCH they can ask you!!
I think my biggest bit of advice now that I am done, is that the BEST thing to do is stay calm. I basically stopped studying 2 weeks before the test. I mostly watched tv, movies and went out with my friends/cousin. I would review lightly every night, and even on the day of the test (my test was at 4 30pm) I ended up watching a movie.
Lastly, I want to end saying, I am NOT the smartest person in the world. I just worked very very very hard for my scores. I probably deserved a 25 for how hard I worked, but this is the story of my life... ohh well - i have to work like 10X harder than most other people. I think if it weren't for my dad giving me pep talks and the dentist I work with giving me a speech on the intricacies of the art of dentistry, I would not have worked this hard. My point is, its important to keep yourself motivated and your head up!
