  1. Pre-Medical
I am a Non Trad - 27 doing a post bac at Columbia. I owned and operated a Merchant Banking outfit in NYC generating 150 million in revenues for our bank. I decided to pursue medicine for a lot of reasons. I am just curious how well I would do during admissions with the following:

3.37 cumulative / 3.8 major GPA in MSIS (Management Science & Info Systems) from a tier 1 top 50 school

3.5-3.7 Science GPA from Columbia Post bac (not sure what it will be yet)

120+ hours research / volunteering in Hospital

Previous background as a successful small business owner who trained and motvated a sales staff while running a full operation in NYC. I left a more lucrative career at a young age to pursue this... Now assuming a 30+ on MCAT, and assuming I will stay on the east coast, how do you think this will stack up with the traditional and non traditional apps?

You're an interesting candidate. Your experience certainly sets you apart. If you get a 30+ on the MCAT, I think you have a good shot. The only probabilty you will know for sure is if you do not try - 0%.

Good luck.

... Now assuming a 30+ on MCAT,

Ask the question once you actually have the 30+ MCAT. Virtually everyone who scored poorly on that test had expectations of doing higher. Your credentials otherwise look reasonable (if you can do a compelling PS, and interview well), though if you are not geographically bound I would suggest applying more broadly than just the 6 or 7 allo schools in the Philly, NJ area.

I will apply to a wide variety of schools, however I will need to be in a region that has good Pharma research as my wife will be graduating from Columbia in Micro Bio (PHD) about the time I matriculate. We are going to try to match my med school with her job placement. CA, NJ, CT, PA have a large proportion of Pharma / Biotech. As far as the PS and interviews that should be easy, I am a solid interviewer. I also realized if I get at 3.6 in PB it will raise my cumulative to 3.43, so that is better than 3.37 🙂

Thanks for the input....

p.s. UMDMJ may be my best best, I have two relatives who went there recently, and I can claim NJ residency... cheaper med school is good 🙂 plus the pharma companies are all over NJ
