Hello!

I was just looking for some advice. I am planning on applying for a pharm program for 2005. I have a 3.87 gpa in my prerequisite courses so far. I bought a bunch of books to study for the pcat (in october) and I'm not too worried about that. I volunteer at the Red Cross, so I have some decent medical experience.

The only problem is that I just can't seem to get any actual pharmacy volunteer or work experience. It's impossible!! I have done one job shadow, but that's it!

Do you think that's enough? Or do you think I need to have experience first?

thanks for your help!!

Your GPA is great so far but I think it's more than grades and pcat. And yes, you should try to do more volunteer work in the community (doesn't really need to be pharmacy, hospital work looks great also). Personally, I'm not a tech and never worked in a pharmacy before. I've only volunteered in a hospital pharmacy one summer and in the ER during the year. In the end, the interview is the most important I think.

again, there are plenty of these posts regarding this topic but to answer your question. yes your gpa look great and i am sure you will do fine with pcat. pharmacy experience is plus but dont sweat over it. just have enough to show that you are interest in this field. you will get an interview most likely just be prepared to come up with some unique answers to questions. that is your deciding point it seems like. good luck.

I saw a post like this in the pre-dent forum, and they attacked the OP! Hmm...looks like we are a little more forgiving in the pharmacy forum? 😉

I think the comments in that forum were rude...but I thought it was kind of funny seeing a similar post on here when I just read that pre-dent one yesterday.

To the OP: Don't take offense to this post. I think your GPA looks great and you still have some EC's and volunteer experience. More involvement will only help you, as long as it doesn't affect your grades too much, but you look like you'll be in fine shape. I agree with UT-Frank in that the interview is really important...let yourself shine during the interview! 🙂

Oh, and getting to the "Will I get in?" question. Like I said, you look like you're in fine shape. However, no one on SDN knows for sure if you'll get in...it's all in the adcoms' hands really! :luck:

wow they are harsh... i dont know why they wouldn't leave that guy alone. but again, we get this kind of post almost everyday! maybe they really could do some reseach in the forum before posting, but i do not mind these kind of post as of yet. we will see.

Sorry,

I did see some similar posts. But most of them were the opposite problem, low gpa's but good experience.
I'm just really freaking out because I really want to get in, I get really good grades, but I probably will get nervous in the interview.

I guess I'll just have to work on that. I heard at UBC (in canada) the interviews are really laid back though so it should be fine.

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it!! 🙂

Oh I forgot

Thank you for not being mean like those guys in the other forum. Ouch. 😱

It depends on a lot of factors, especially on the interview. Whether or not they like you will depend heavily on the interview....from my experience. Your good GPA, work, volunteer experiences, recommendations are just the impressions to make them invite you for an interview.

Good luck.

Thanks, that's a good article. I hope that job shadowing is enough for them, it is just so damn impossible to get some experience out here. All of our big drug stores only take people who are already in the program or done their tech program, and all the little pharmacies don't want anyone.
