Since I did not get into medical school this year and do not wish to start re-paying my loans I am applying to an MPH program. I plan on retaking the MCAT in late July and will have the rest of my application submitted by then. Now some of my questions are should I wait until I finish my MPH before re-applying? Or would the fact that they see I am still motivated to continue my education through the MPH program strengthen my application?

Major -- biochemistry
Minor -- chemistry
cGPA -- 3.33
sGPA -- 3.49
Strong upward trend
Freshman – 2.81
Sophomore – 3.29
Junior – 3.65
Senior – 3.81
MCAT -- 23M
EC -- Just to highlight and condense this section I was in several clubs including the national pre-health honor society AED, worked as a medical assistant for the last 1.5 years as well as played football for a NAIA team for 1 year and transferred and played D-1 for a top 10 team for a semester. Several other community service and volunteer activities as well.

The MPH will keep you in loan deferral, but it won't really do anything to help your app. It's a decent new EC for your next app.

If the MPH program prevents you from adding about 10 points to your MCAT score, then it's a harmful choice.

I suggest you should be looking at programs that are more biomedical, possibly that include MCAT prep. Such as the MBS at Tufts. See the postbac forum for more ideas.

Best of luck to you.

I agree! The MCAT is the quickest way to improve your application and if you really kill it.... 👍

Oh, and definitely research the programs (as mentioned above) and their success. I did a post-bacc that I really liked but it didn't have much structure and no MCAT prep was included. I just like to study on my own I guess but figure out what your options are.

I dont see the MPH program preventing me from adding ~10 points to my MCAT because I will be taking the MCAT late July and school does not start until August. Getting a MS in biomedical sciences I think would be beneficial but it's my understanding that these programs are research oriented (at least the ones in Oklahoma are) and I do not have experience in research so I think it would be unlikely to be admitted to one of these programs...

I was more interested in how admissions would view me going to graduate school for a degree that would be applicable once I did start practicing medicine vs. taking more undergraduate science courses that would not show up on my application for next cycle anyways....
