Hey, all.

I applied to vet schools this year, but apparently won't get in (still waiting on one to answer). So... obviously, I am going to re-apply next year.

However, I am a little bit worried about the GRE. I studied A LOT for the test and got a pretty decent score. So, given the amount of time I spent and the score I got, I don't really want to go through the whole process of taking the test again.

Does anyone know if vet schools will require the new test? Or will the old test still be usable? Will it vary by school? Or does no one know?

I don't know for sure, but I can't imagine they'd make everyone who's taken the old exam in the last 3 years take it again just so they can have the new version. They can still compare percentiles, so that's what matters, not the actual score.

A&M is making people take the new one for next year's app cycle. Pisses me off because the scores are supposed to be reportable for five years, and I was required to take the old one this year to apply. Some schools apparently think we're just rolling in time and money.

I really hope they don't require the revised GRE, and I really don't think most will require it. The revised GRE hasn't even been out for a year now, so I think it's too new for them to require it (except A&M - Sorry Trilt, I didn't see your reply when I first posted mine). It will not be difficult to compare the new and old scores. I am waiting to get decisions from two more schools. If I do not get in, I will be taking the revised GRE to try to raise my scores, but my old GRE scores are really not bad at all. I would like to use those ones as a safety net in case I do worse on the new one. 🙂

This is not the first time the GRE has been revised. Does anyone know what happened in the past when it was revised?

The new GRE is much more test taker friendly. Aside from the cost of taking it again, it's a better test to be taking. I thought it was really reasonable as far as academic expectations.

In the Kaplan practice book I'm using right now, it said that every time ETS changes something on the GRE, scores get lower and schools take that into account. That's why schools really rely on the percentiles.

Varies by school.

LSU says: "Beginning with the '12-'13 application cycle (which opens in early-June, 2012), the LSU SVM will only accept the new GRE Revised General Test scores."

Which is a huge bummer/annoyance. I am VERY happy with my current GRE score (old format), don't want to have to pay to re-take it, don't want to have to study for the new format, don't want to sit through another looooooong exam, don't want the what-if-my-score-is-worse stress, etc. 👎 👎

So... here's hoping I get moved off the alternate list and don't have to re-apply. 😀

Good luck with that! That would be wonderful! :luck:

I was going to mention this. 🙂

And then I can get accepted, and we will be at school together!! 🙂

I spoke with one of the admissions people from OR today, and here is what he said (paraphrased):

"We will accept any GRE score within the past 5 years. We disregard total score, instead weaverage the three percentile scores together (V, Q, A) to rank students."

I hope that adds to the conversation.

Do you get your percentile ranking right after the test or do you have to wait until you get your AW scores?

If you have your scaled score, you can use that to find your percentile. (You can find the conversion graphs everywhere. Wikipedia has them.)

Of course, it takes ~2 weeks to get your AW scores, and they will send you your 'official' percentiles at that time as well.

I was told by someone that Mississippi State will not require the new GRE next year. Hope that bit of information helps. 🙂

Hey guys,

I'm taking the GRE tomorrow for the first, and hopefully the only, time tomorrow morning. After practicing with timing for two months, I just took the timed practice test on the ETS website as a final study aid. I found myself struggling with time because the questions were so goddamn long.

For those of you who took the GRE already, did you find yourself struggling with time on the actual test? And is the practice test a good indicator of what the real test will be like, scores included?

Hello all... Bumping this thread to see if there is any new school-specific information? It sounds like each school is taking the new GRE differently.

So far, the schools we know of requiring the new GRE are: LSU, A&M.

The schools not requiring the new GRE are: OR

Can anyone add to this list of schools that do or do not require the new GRE? (Personally, I am interested in Davis, Colorado, UPenn, Wash State, Tufts)

Retrounicorn, I took the old GRE once and the revised GRE once. The only difference between the two that I noticed was my own preparedness. As long as you know that time is an issue and you don't completely forget about the time limits, then you should be fine. For the reading comp questions, I'd recommend reading the questions before reading the actual passages since it seems to save some time. And remember all the tips they gave you in high school for the SAT/ACT. 🙂

I took a couple practice tests online and they were accurate-ish. You'll probably be in the same ball park of scores, but it's luck of the draw what kind of questions you end up with. I'm sure you'll do great! Good luck!

Thanks for the response, but I took the GRE a little over a month ago! Wasn't too bad 🙂 I'm sure your reply will help others that are feeling apprehensive about the revised version. Don't stress!
