I did not match in psychiatry (I know that sounds odd, but it was a very competitive year). My ideal goal is to get a one year internship then try again for psychiatry next year, but I am finding that the majority of internship spots seem to be gone already. I have found a few places that at first indicated that they had spots but are now saying I may not have an answer about if there is any room for me to enter their program as a traditional rotating intern until Friday afternoon.

In contrast, I have received several offers of positions from a few DO IM programs who want me to take a spot for the whole 3 years in tehir IM residency. It seems like the DO spots are becoming scarce, so I am wondering if it would be a terrible mistake to wait until Friday when I have an answer about the TRI spots before I accept one of the IM program offers? Will the IM spots likely all be spoken for by then?
I don't want to wind up in the wrong specialty in haste, but I don't want to miss out on all the spots out there by waiting too long.
Any advice?

That is a tough situation. Do you have any interest in IM? If I put myself in your shoes (I'm a DO, too), I would be worried about getting any spot this year because everything seems more competitive. With the competitiveness of MD IM programs, I think a lot of DO's will be reverting back to DO IM residencies after not matching. I would want to snag one of those DO spots asap.

Of course, if you're not interested in IM at all, that would not be a fun 1+ years.

so why do DO's want to go to MD residencies, are their any real benefits? Sorry, I am about to enter DO school and would like to know. Thanks!

1. Because sometimes in some fields, the MD residencies are clearly superior
2. Sometimes there just arent any DO residencies in a given field, or very few eg PM&R
3. Sometimes people want to stay in a given area and there are no osteopathic residencies in the area eg Chicago for Peds
