Well i graduated from HS, and then went to college and completed 1 semester of classes. I wasnt really sure what i wanted to do yet...i slacked it alot this 1st semester and ended up with 3 B's(english/anthro/speach) and 1 C(gen chem1a), putting me at like a 2.71 gpa.

I am currently in my second semester now and i am taking biol 1a/phil/psych/sociol...alot is going on right now and I alrdy know that I will end up with probably all B's this semester. The last day to drop classes with a W is next week. Im really not motivated for school right now, and i think a semester off will really help me get back on track.

I am thinking about taking this semester off, dropping all of my classes with a W, and instead of going to school, working/volunteering at a hospital for the remainder of this semester and summer. Then next fall i plan on returning back to school, taking those classes again and getting A's in all of them.

Now my question is will dropping all of my classes this semester and getting a W in all of them look bad later on down the road? or will this prolly not affect me that much, especially if i am working at a hospital and doing volunteer work and come back next year and make really good grades?

Grades aren't the whole picture. Much more goes into a medical school application than your GPA.

HOWEVER... it sounds like you need to figure out if Medicine is really right for you. Volunteering at a hospital sounds like a good idea. Try to talk with as many docs as possible while there. Connect... Figure out if Med is really for you.

I know for myself, volunteering (in and out of the hospital) brought my goals into focus and allowed me to get more passionate about my studies.

mmm... sounds like my personal statement....

Studying is a lot easier when you know that it is a means to an end, and not an end in itself.

About the W's: I don't have a great perspective on that, but everybody I know who has a W on their transcript (especially in the Medical Pre-req's) has been asked to explain them in an interview...

Hope this was helpful...

There is not much you can do about the past so if medicine is what you want then apply yourself for it. Don't make yourself sick over it but def make it a priority. Ws are not great but not a deal breaker either. If you have a pattern of poor work then the adcoms will pick up on it. And if you show you can't handle the workload in college, what do they have to go on regarding your performance in medical school?
