Hey everyone, first time posting. Just curious if this will in any way hold me back. During my sophmore year, I was not very motivated, which resulted in two C+s in Organic Chemistry and a C in Biochemistry 😳 . Also, unfortunately, if I want to graduate in May, I will not be able to take Physics or Calculus (Im a Biology major). I will take these classes at a CC during my year off. My GPA is a 3.5. Will these drawbacks affect my chances? Thanks for any input!

They could. They O Chems are IMPORTANT pre reqs that schools look at. I would take them over. (I know, that's easier said than done) Schools usually give you a chance to explain an "academic difficulty", and that's where you could tell them why you took the classes twice. Are you applying for 07 or 08?

I will be applying for 08. And you are right, taking a class over is easier said than done. I know if I took it over again I would do well at it, but jeez thats just extra money I do not have considering I already have to take physics and calculus! Argh

If you think that's bad, you'll hate the pharm school tuition. 🙂

You're going to need to at least retake O-Chem. Some schools only let C's in O-chem slide if they've admitted the student. Other's won't tolerate C's at all in O-chem. If you want pharm school, you'll make it work.

Good luck.

Take them over if you get a chance. But I had a C in biochem, and I took the Orgo series, FOUR times before it clicked, yet here I sit in pharmacy school.

So really, it depends on the rest of your application. With a 3.5, about to get your BS, if your PCAT is 80+ or so, with relevent other experiences, I think that those two Cs will be alright.

Your other option might be to take a class that would show mastery of OChem. For instance I was able to take Medicinal chemistry which requires an understanding of Ochem. Depending on which series you took (upper/lower division) you might be able to take an intermediate course if your school has one. Where I'm getting my BS there is a 400 series Intermediate OChem for those that took the 200 Series. A good grade could boost your Science GPA in addition to your Cumulative. That way if they don't look at specific classes as closely as your science GPA's you'd have a pretty good shot.
