With identical board scores and class rank does the medical school matter?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

For instance, if I attended what the majority consider the worst us medical school or in the bottom tier and I score the exact same on boards would I have the same shot at the same residency as the student in the top 20 medical school.

If it is not the same chance, how much of a difference is there and what would make it more even of a chance at the same residency. I am assuming similar application all around ie ECs, research etc.

Discussions on DO and MD are welcome.

Please just lock this now.

That thing at the top of the screen called 'search' works wonders.

First of all this is an impractical situation as NO two people will have identical applications.

Having said that, if EVERYTHING is absolutely the same (boards, grades, research, LORs, EC, personality, etc) then whoever went to a school which is “perceived” to provide better education wins.

Which means, the person who went to one of the top 20 medical schools or the school that has placed a resident in that same residency program and they were satisfied with the performance of that resident. If both schools have had residents there then the person from the school with the better resident!

But again this will never be the situation because there are so many variables involved in residency that it is impossible for two sets of applications to be identical.

I really mean the same board scores or similar and the rest of the application is similar but not the exact same, because I know people would just say the person with the better app would win.

I shoul have asked this in pre- allo.

Well in that case then,

The person who went to one of the top 20 medical schools or the school that has placed a resident in that same residency program and they were satisfied with the performance of that resident. If both schools have had residents there then the person from the school with the better resident!

Well yes.

Ok say a med student from bottom tier school vs top tier where the bottom tier med student scored 5 to 10 points higher on the boards with similar but NOT EXACT (Jesus Christ i better clarify that) apps. There has to be a point where the edge is given to the top 20 med students vs not.

The one with the better personality wins. The jerk loses. Even if otherwise the applications on paper are extremely similar.

Agreed. Every residency director I have spoke to in the last year has said the interview is the most important aspect to your application. Sure killer boards and great LOR's will be a benefit but nothing trumps the impression you leave and how they envision you in their program.

No

You can't quantify it but I doubt it would be that big of a difference- that is why you see students from low tier schools matching at teh top places in the country.

Not exactly what I am asking chief. I am not going to waste my time on an arrogant naive sdner who thinks their **** smells like roses.

He answers your question by suggesting you search first and by providing links, and in response to his generosity you curse him?

Good luck landing a residency with that winning personality.

Pot, meet kettle. This insult means nothing from an arrogant pre-med that can't seem to work the search function.

This has been discussed to death in pre-allo. Yes being from a top 20 school may give you a slight leg up.

Lets just :lock: this now.

I pray to the SDN gods that one day we will live in a non-******ed forum society and that all anonymous posters would learn the way of the SDN and stop posting these F-ing MD vs DO threads.

They are a little entertaining to read when you're bored though.

Reading a few hundred threads on the same subject that's been beaten to death is not entertaining. Well, at least not for me.

Because sdn correlates to real life, hahahahahahah.

Me unlike you can see a picture and response posted and know when it is insulting and demeaning. You are ridiculous.

I did search first, learn how to read.

Like I said I should have posted this in pre allo to get more mature responses. Ask yourself maybe that you don't like the results of my original question.

What generosity. Just go away! You remind me of my little sister trying to be a "big" person.

My thread isn't about md vs do directly or has this purposeful intention.

Sometimes you have to find out the facts and if that involves spreading sdn gonorrhea so be it.

What is worse is the amount of sdn philosophers and psychologists who think they have life answers and go out and preach it here.

no offense, but it's a stupid question to start with. you and others like you create a situation in which EVERYTHING is identical except the school. well, if indeed everything is identical, what else is there to go with? hair color?

Anyone wanna start a pot for "When will RELAX have his SDN account banned?" All dates are open except for May 20th, that's my square.

That's what they all say before the thread turns into MD vs DO spit fest.

And if you would have read this thread you would have known that similar does not equal exact same. But let's fabricate like you want because than you will be right, and we know how people love to be right.

you have essentially created that scenario and then when people called you on it you changed it ever so slightly, as if people are going to give you some sort of linear regression with school rankings. if you were a thinking person, which you obviously are not, this thread would not have been necessary. it still isn't, but much like your own unfortunate existence, its birth, while regrettable, is in the past.

Lmfao, can you say...

FABRICATION?

I corrected what I really wanted to know after my first post but i forgot that you control my mind and are telling me "No you still want to know the question from the first post even tho you said you don't"
