Here is my stats

Overall GPA: 3.45, Science GPA 3.48
MCAT in 2009: 9/9/9 27
Took 2 years off after Undergrad
USF M.S. in Medical Science: GPA 3.9 (all science)
MCAT 10/11/11 32

2 years volunteering with Hospice
5 months with mentally handicapped children
1 year Bio tutoring
3 months Manna Food Bank
20 hours Physician Shadowing (different types)
No Research
Working full time while in M.S. Program.

My overall stats point towards applying DO also but I am hoping the SMP program is given some extra weight, especially because I feel like a totally different student from when I originally graduated in 2010.

I live in FL and am hoping for a state school. I just haven't looked into the DO process much and since its a separate application I don't know if I should put in the extra time and money to do that as well (Still working full time). Basically I'm just unsure on how much they will weigh my M.S. program compared to my overall GPA. I didn't want to make this thread before I actually know my MCAT scores, but considering I need to make decisions on applying now, I had to do it.

Thanks

Taking MCAT 05/18. Let's say I get a 32 (though hoping for more).

With a 32+ and a 3.9 MS GPA, if you can explain your previous 27/3.48 in a convincing way, you should be able to go into a pretty competitive MD program. I think you have a great chance at getting into the florida schools. I think the weakest part of your application is not your scores at this point but the fact that you have no research, which will make it difficult to get into top tier programs, but should not be a problem at mid or low-tier MD programs.

To be honest I just want to get in somewhere, I am thankful that I live in FL where there is a good number of MD schools with mean stats that aren't insane. My overall GPA is probably on the lower end for most of them, and my EC's and LOR's are probably average.

Also being honest, I have little interest in research and my number 1 choice is FSU (which is my undergrad institution) and their whole mission statement is "Primary care physicians in under-served areas" so I don't think my lack of research should hurt me too much there.

My undergrad GPA is probably more like a 3.4 because the overall 3.48 is including my M.S. grades. I have just heard different things on how schools weight post-bac programs so I was unsure. And its very hard to find concrete information on where the program at USF fits in, the threads on here about it don't say much.

Bump because I received my MCAT score.

10/11/11 32.

I submitted for verification on the Wednesday after it opened on Monday. Feel like my PS is strong, LORs will probably be average (I have them all ready).

I will definitely be at the front line for everything timing wise as I plan on prewriting secondaries.

Does everyone think I'm good to not apply D.O.? Haven't even looked at that application process, though I assume its pretty similar. I would prefer M.D. and I think I'm competitive.

You should be OK for MD since you are considered in-state for FL schools... Anecdotal evidence tells me that you will be very competitive FSU, FIU and UCF
