Hi all, I’m new here so bear with me! I’m a first-time applicant and I’m super anxious because I know invitations for interviews will be sent out soon. I was hoping someone here could tell me my chances.
Age: 20
Gender: female
Race/ethnicity: Asian/Chinese
GPA overall: 3.8
GPA science: 3.49
School applied to: Michigan State University (in state applicant)
Current School: Macomb Community College
Degree earned/will earn: Associates of Science
Awards/Honors: Dean’s list every semester, graduated high school Cum Laude
Veterinary experience
-1,300+ hours working as a veterinary assistant in a small animal clinic (this is my current job). The doctor I work with also likes to incorporate holistic treatments into modern medicine so I’ve been able to learn about that. I made sure to include that in one of my essays to sound more “unique”
-I also did shadowing at an emergency clinic, a traveling equine vet, and a rehabilitation center (about 30 hours total)
Animal experience
-160+ hours volunteering at my local humane society. This involved not only working with the animals but also fundraising and working events. Last year I chaired an event that raised over $10,000
-690 hours as a dog bather at a grooming salon.
Other experience
-210 hours in tutoring a local family
-1000 hours participating in choir (middle school, high school, and college combined)
-300 hours involved in my high school theater program
-540 hours as child watch (fancy for babysitter of a large group of children) at the community rec center. I was responsible for the care and wellbeing of a large group of children, sometimes 10 or more at a time.
-I also recently joined a political activist group and my college’s honors society. I have volunteered an event or two for each. I wish I could’ve given more but I’m so busy with school. I’m sure you all know how it is.
I guess I’m just nervous because I am young and I probably don’t have as much or diverse experience as other applicants. I also will not be going in with a bachelor’s degree because I chose to attend community college to save money. I also felt like my experiences lacked a little. I included high school experiences becauseI felt they were still relevant for my age. I also wish I had research experience but I had a hard time finding opportunities that didn’t require a bachelor’s degree.
