Hey guys, so basically I live in Washington going to university. I have 1 1/2 left before I graduate with bachelors in BIO. I'm wondering when should I apply in to dental school? Like is it possible to apply before I finish my bachelors? My gf is in nursing school with about 2 years left, so we are close in being complete with school together. I want to be accepted in to dental school (hopefully) when I finish my bachelors if possible so me and her can just move right away if needed. So am I able to apply to dental school while finishing my classes? And also when should I take my DAT?..

Yeah you can still apply. You will just need to list the classes that you are planning to take on your AADSAS application. If you are planning to apply this summer for fall 2017 (assuming you graduate in spring 2017), then you should take your DAT this summer. The only way I would hold off on applying is if you are still missing the majority of your prereqs, will be unable to study for the DAT, or are really lacking in volunteer/shadowing hours.

If you want to go straight into dental school without a gap year you need to apply the summer before you graduate. So it should be the summer right before your last year.

How many prereqs are you talking about when you say "majority"? I am applying this next cycle and I will be missing Physics I/ II and Biochem. As well as anatomy and Psychology (Which I know most schools do not require.)

Should be fine.

You'll also have that last summer to squeeze out a last class or two (though I sure as hell wouldn't want to be taking classes at the summer pace right before starting dental school!)

Unfortunately yes im still missing more then a few prereqs (Ochem,Biochem, Microbio, and Physics) i will take ochem and physics this fall semester. I should graduate on 2018 spring if everything goes to plan. And the thing with the volunteer hours i was wanting to volunteer this summer and study up for DAT to take in the winter. Ive been a dental assistant sense i was 18 now im 22. So i know for a fact im very passionate for dentistry. Im wondering is volunteer or shadowing more favored opp-on? And how long would the volunteer hours last me? For instance back in 2012 i volunteered at gentle dental for 145 hours but it was for fun mostly. And i try to volunteer for free kids dental days to help out.
Thanks for the help!! 🙂🙂

You could try the DAT without taking OC but I would highly advise against it. If you're taking the DAT this winter, I think you'll be too late for that cycle. Regardless, OC and Physics are huge pre-reqs and I think it'd be better if the grades are on your app before you apply. I would plan on a gap year.

I see.. That's unfortunate, ill speak to my adviser and go in to detail about my classes, maybe she can see if i can re-position my class schedule to better suit the DAT tests and dental school registration. Thank you!

I agree with this. I would go ahead and take the gap year to get caught up with everything that you can be ready to apply when it comes time. I took a gap year after my Masters and it was kind of nice to have some actual money saved up for interviewing!

I never looked at it that was, thanks ill probably do that. Maybe take a breather for a little and get everything in order prior to applying and make sure my application is solid.
