Just wanted to let everyone know that I am taking a tour of WVSOM's campus in two weeks. I've heard that the people are incredibly friendly, and I'm really looking forward to having the chance to meet some of the faculty and medical students.

This question may have been asked before, but I have only found topics with it asked in the context of "what do I wear to an interview?" Would a pair of black pants and a button up shirt be appropriate?

That's what I'm leaning towards, but I don't want to be ridiculously overdressed.

Your right they are extremely nice at WVSOM. At my interview everyone had on dark blue or charcoal suits. Ive never done a tour of a school but I'm sure something along those lines couldn't hurt...

Be prepared to be wowed by the technology at the school, it's top notch.

For my interview I bought a $600 navy blue pinstriped suit (go with the athletic cut, if you are fit) and then spent $100 having it tailored so it fit just right. I wore a nice white shirt (bought at nordys) and a very nice red silk tie. All told...bout' 8 bones, but I felt extra confident on interview day because I knew I looked rockin.

I know its a lot of dough, but you want to stand out from the funeral procession (that term was coined by my advisor who interviews at UCI)

Edit: Also, all the men at all of my interviews had full suits on. If you dont have a jacket you may feel underdressed.

BTW, Eric, I'm all for having one really kick-ass suit in your repertoire that makes you feel completely confident (although not *cocky*) and allows you to really give your best at interviews. It's gotta look good and fit well. 👍

ditto this statement. on my NG interview, when I cam back in the room, the one cpt. said something like (oh, and the name of your tailor. That suit is awesome.). Plus, you can never go wrong with a rockin red power tie.

Well I wouldn't say that much but its nice to know that WV is making the most out of their exorbitant OOS tuition rates...yes the computerized patients are amazing. They also put a lot of money into their anatomy lab and their lecture halls (all wired w/ mic's and headsets at everyones personal desk), this year everyone get's a $3,000 dollar laptop, etc.

I'd worry about attire like this looking too flashy. I'm of the opinion that you don't really want to waltz into a medical school interview looking like a Wall Street I-banker...it's not humble and you my give off greedy/materialistic vibes that certainly aren't going to do you any favors.

You SoCal boys know your style. I'm from coastal Florida and the only shoes I had were flip-flops. Honest to god.

I had to have a friend take me suit shopping. Like a kid with his mom before the first week of school or something....

It's not always about blue suit, white shirt, red tie. Go with something that shows your individual taste and a little bit of outside-the-box fashion taste. Don't just be another suit.

At all of my interviews I was the only guy in a blue suit, everyone else was in black or charcoal. I had the only red tie as well. I think that an application should mostly tow the line and not stray too much from mainstream professional attire.

Don't let that sweat you...there are 30 years worth of WVSOM alumni doing just fine. There are so many ways to cover the loans, etc. Almost any group practice or hospital group includes loan repayment, or military, or NHS or other.

Everyone mentions the OOS, but after your loans are consolidated, the difference will only be a few hundred a month if that. Pennies compared to the avg. monthly phys. salary of $17,000.

The answer to those questions are 1) Not of any significance and 2) No. But I think that you will find that true of most osteopathic medical schools.

Make sure you consider how long the school has been around and if they have solid clinical sites and established relationships with hospitals...
