And he just so happens to practice in my top choice of specialty, and he's a D.O.! I plan on applying to MSU's DO program so I need a LOR from a DO. He said I can shadow as much as a couple times a week if I want to. He's also good friends with a lot of the surgeons there and he said if I want to branch off and shadow another doctor, he can set me up with an ortho surgeon, cardiothoracic surgeon, and a hand!!! surgeon. How freaking cool is that? I mainly just want to shadow him, but it would be cool as heck to shadow an ortho surgeon for a while. I'll know for sure when I can start by Monday.

😀 I know this sort of thing isn't big news to most of you, but it's pretty big for me. I've had a lot of 'clinical' experience, but I've had minimal interaction with actual doctors so this is a good break for me.

Congrats.. Its a great way to get some experience.

Nice. I intend on shadowing a Physician as well, any advice on how it is done? How shall I come across a Physician asking if I may shadow him/her?

Usually if you either work with a doctor that knows you well enough you can ask, or probably in most cases through networking. This guy is like a friend-of-a-friend's dad and he put in the good word for me I guess. Another option would be a doctor that provides you with care. When I broke my arm I asked my ortho surgeon if I could shadow him. He said he didn't feel comfortable letting pre-meds shadow him and he asked why I was so interested. I just said that I had such a positive experience under his care I wanted to give something back. He was stubborn, but he talked to the head of volunteer staff and set me up with a volunteer position in the ortho unit. 🙂
