You don't get letter grades, oldman? We do, and our class rank is based on our actual percentages.

just pass and fail.

our class rank is based on total points. so in reality we have grades. the total points thing makes me feel like i'm competing for the decathalon.

Congratulations Q!

You deserve a smiley orgy for this accomplishment! 😀

are you in med school? if so what school is it that offers letter grades?

Nope, I'm a post-bac student, so still undergrad. Quite a few med schools still give letter grades tho, no? Also, perhaps there's some hidden reason for this that I'm not aware of, but it seems the Honors-High Pass-Pass-Low Pass-Fail system at some schools is just a cynical attempt to still use the A-F system without looking like they use the A-F system (ie, Low Pass = D)...

well i chose a school that offers pass and fail. the honors thing is only given by some classes for the top 10%. overall we can earn honors for the year if we are in the top 20%. the overall honors is given as a cumulative point total, which is why i used the decathalon metaphor.

Actually, my school is pretty non-competitive. They don't publicize the class rank...you only know your rank without the rest being posted.

since you have letter grades, do you worry about getting A's? thanks to the pass/fail system I just think...must get the P...must get the P...P=MD!

I definitely want a pass-fail med school 😀 When you same cumulative point total, do you mean the max # of honors one received? Or do they rank within each class, add up all the ranks, and give honors to the people with the lowest numbers (highest ranks)

H,HP,P,MP,F != A,B,C,D,F

...at least not at my school... how would you like to make a B with a range of 87 to 91? I rest my case.

Depends on the person, of course. Some people are driven to As (and we had a few students with 4.0 for the 1st semester), others are quite content with Cs (at my school the saying is 2.0=DO, basically the same as the C=MD that I've seen elsewhere). I have a scholarship that requires I keep a minimum of Bs, so I personally feel more driven.

ah, i guess that's not so bad. too bad you have to maintain a B average for your scholarship. that's no fun!

for me, if i had lettergrades still i would probably stress out over them a lot more.
