I'm a junior now and was thinking about working abroad for a year, so pretty much delaying a year for graduation. The work would be something related to research, not dentistry and I'm wondering how that would affect the dental application process. Also, would they view this as a positive or a negative?

Give us some background info to help better answer. It's not common for someone to go work abroad between their junior or senior years so it's going to be hard to answer without some extra info.

Working abroad will serve to get you noticed.

i worked abroad for 7 months in a research lab between my junior and senior year (still graduated on time, though). i worked in a lab completely unrelated to dentistry (physical chemistry) and the experience has been viewed very favorably in all of my interviews so far. schools like people that seek out new and unchartered experiences. i say do it: the #1 college regret is not going abroad, so i'm told. you won't get a chance like this again very easily!

polarmolar, I was just thinking about applying for an internship abroad because I thought it would be a cool experience. What background information are you looking for?

cobalt31, thanks for the response. I don't think I can graduate on time though because I won't be able to take any credits for classes or anything though and I still need my senior year to finish up my requirements for dental school. Also, what made you do lab work instead of studying abroad? I'm guessing I still have the option to do this too.

nateandjenny, I found out through my language advisor. I plan on minoring a language and he sent me some information related to internships and this opportunity was appealing.

Hopefully, Japan.
