Work for USPHS?

Hello, if you don't mind me asking, how come you hate owning your pharmacy? It must have taken a lot of work and effort to set it up...As a student, I think USPHS is a great option with lots of benefits. You do get deployed; however, it is almost always in the US.

i open this pharmacy one year after I graduate from pharm school...not for the money more in a way to see what type of work style and life style i would enjoy..... by now.. i get the sense that this is real not for me...essential point is that , i dun have the heart of a businessman, never will be converted to that too....and i dun enjoy it at all....when i work for retail at least i can think of meds and therapeutic.. now everythiong is just dolloar.., i have nto choices.....so i dun think this is for me...regardless make money or not...
i am on a 1-2 year plan to figure out wat i want.. if not.. jsut go back to retial

Wow, you opened up your own pharmacy one year after you graduated. How long ago was this?...I went to a NCPA meeting recently and one of the mentors, an independent owner himself, said that it is possible to make ~$150,000 of pure profit after paying yourself and taking care of all the bills. What's your take on this? Is it possible considering the important point you brought up with your other post about decreasing compensations?...On another note though I'm sure you have already considered it, why not hire in a pharmacist to work? This way, you can maintain ownership and reap the benefits of the residual income coming in while you try out something else you enjoy.

my store is nyc. well, that might be true for old time store owner who has good reimburse rate and less competition so it is relative easier for they to establish or for a store who is well established. but now day...with less profit margin and completion of chain store, mail order and other store...it is very hard to grow volume, it will take a long time to get that that point that u have good profit...doable. but it will be very hard and take much longer time
I did a rotation at the IHS and it looked like a sweet job. Compensation is competitive with retail but you get military benefits, but it doesn't feel like the military and they don't just send you wherever they need you - you get a choice of places to go and they won't make you transfer once you're there. There was (almost) no insurance to deal with and you only have to deal with IHS doctors, who are accessible. I wasn't in a position to apply there because I needed a job right away when I graduated in May and I have good reasons not to job hop now, but it's certainly a good option.
Since you have something now you're in a good position to go through the painful application process. As I understand it, PHS pharmacists usually start with the IHS.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you do your IHS rotation? Also, when you're talking about availability of doctors, is that to you as the pharmacist (for clarification or whatever) or to you as a patient? How did you find the pharmacy was treated by the other hospital departments? Were you in the hospital pharmacy or the primary care pharmacy (if they were different where you were)? Were all the pharmacists USPHS, or were there other "civilian" pharmacists working alongside?
Basically, anything you'd like to share would be appreciated. 😀
