How does one does this?

How would I get into working at a military hospital as a nurse, and eventually after med school, as a doctor? Is it impossible?

What steps would I have to take, starting now? (going into my 2nd yr. pre med only) any advice, direction, links, etc is helpful..

They hire from agencies usually so you have to find out which agency the hospital in question hires from and work for them. You can apply on USA jobs but I was prior military and never had a hit on jobs I was well qualified for. I thought would have been great for while I was in undergrad didn't work out that way though. Good luck!

are you a nurse or premed? if you go to med school you can finish residency and work as a contract physician through USAJobs or another hiring agency

Well, sort of complicated. Im a pre med, but I'm doing my undergrad as an assoc. RN, then finishing undergrad BS, and then applying, that way I can work through the rest of UG and Med (hopefully).

I was just curious about how many people do this. I would like to get into Military Hospitals, but as civilian and had no idea how to even go about this. many of the threads I tried searching through gave me the impression that I'd have to go through the actual services to do this, that civilian contracts are few and far between.

I don't understand your question. Enlisting is a term used for enlisted, which is non-degreed persons. If you are a nurse and join the military, you will not "enlist."

Is that what you meant, or are you saying you want to work at a military hospital and not be part of the military? That's easy. Most military hospitals hire a ton of nurses that aren't military. In fact, in the military hospital I most recently worked at, there were more civilian nurses than military. There is no special track you need to take.

Here is the algorithm they will use to hire you. Are you a nurse? Yes = hire. No = maybe hire.

she just got confused between "enlisting" and being "commissioned"...basically the question was if she had to join the military in order to be a nurse while she paid for undergrad/med school and before becoming a physician......................................................

Yes sort of....I used the wrong terms, but what I actually meant was the best way to go about getting into a military hospital AFTER med school as a physician without joining the military. basically was looking for advice on how to "decorate" my transcripts and resume in the formative years now to make it more likely to get in then.

(The nursing part was probably what confused everyone, I just mentioned it because while Im a pre med, Im doing my undergrad as an RN, so i can work as one during the rest of undergrad and med school, to support myself financially and gain clinical experience...) *Just disregard, i meant as a doctor, the best moves to make to "guarantee" (for lack of a better term) that I'll be able to get into military hospitals.

Sorry for the confusion.

Judging by the amount of contracts advertised looking for civilian contractors, I wouldn't imagine that they'd be so competitive that anyone who is BC with a couple years of experience couldn't find a gig. I wouldn't sweat it about "decorating" your transcript for anything other than getting into your residency.

Anyone heard of non-military MSIVs doing elective rotations at military hospitals/bases?
If so, where does one start the process? thx

Yes it is possible. Your school would need to have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the military hospital. You would need to contact the GME office at the hospital you would like to visit.
