Does anyone know in what specialties there are absolutely no night calls? The only one I can think of is derm. I'm asking because, I don't know how others do it, but I just cannot switch back and forth between nights and days. I literally become miserable without sleep and consistency 🙁 Short calls until 7pm or even 9pm would be okay, but after that my brain turns into mush. I'm okay with working weekends too.

How about just rare overnight calls? You'll still have to suffer through residency first.
Ophtho (there are very few things that can't wait until morning)
Rheum
Allergy
Primary care (if outpatient only, may have to answer pages at night but don't have to go in)
PM&R
OccMed
Derm
Endocrine
Hand (with exception of traumatic amputations and the like...most things can wait)
RadOnc
Rads (hospital dependent)
Pathology

Wow... I just. You applied to medical school knowing this was a requirement and now realize this? Just do psych or pathology. Those people leave before rush hour.

So you are like everyone else?

No one likes going without sleep.

No one likes switching back and forth between days and nights.

Everyone has trouble thinking clearly without sleep.

I did it because it was part of the job, because I had to. You get used to it like most things in life.

However, Smurfette has given you lots of options above. Some you have to get through some call during residency but most will afford you a call-free/light schedule once you're done.

I'm not asking because I'm lazy or don't want to work, I'm asking due to my health.

If you are doing outpatient-only work doesn't that mean you'll probably not be doing a lot of overnight calls for most specialties?

Even intern year for most of those specialties mentioned would require you to have those inconsistent working hours with less than optimal sleep.

Best advice for you is to suck it up brother, no one likes getting minimal sleep each night

Yeah because you never need a frozen section at night when you operate for an emergency...
And it's well known psych patients never go berserk or suicidal at night.

Yes,
But they're the ones that don't require as much overnight call or hectic/long work hours. I never said you don't do it... just that it's nowhere near as bad.
