In retail, what is your company policy regarding which holidays you work and which ones you get off?
I feel like I'm getting screwed this year. It seems like a few years ago it was a "work every other holiday" policy so at least the next year you get the opposite holidays off and can plan relatively ahead of time. This year they are saying that you are only guaranteed off on a holiday if you put it in the system and are officially approved. So far I've worked New Year's Day, Memorial Day, and am scheduled to work July 4, off Labor Day and am on call for Thanksgiving and Christmas (meaning they dangle the hope of being off but then schedule you somewhere last minute the day before). WTF. And yes, I did try to put it in the system that I wanted off but was denied. What I don't understand is that only the 24 hour stores are open on Thanksgiving and Christmas which means less stores to cover, yet I still can't get either one off as a floater (some days they have around 30 extra floaters!). I bet they'll even throw in an overnight shift for me December 31 to really rub it in.
Do you think there is anything I can do about this? I know some will suggest speaking with the district supervisor, but it seems like I already got that answer when I was denied. I have a feeling they go by seniority but that means I'll get screwed pretty much every year for the next decade or so if that's the case.
