In retail, what is your company policy regarding which holidays you work and which ones you get off?

I feel like I'm getting screwed this year. It seems like a few years ago it was a "work every other holiday" policy so at least the next year you get the opposite holidays off and can plan relatively ahead of time. This year they are saying that you are only guaranteed off on a holiday if you put it in the system and are officially approved. So far I've worked New Year's Day, Memorial Day, and am scheduled to work July 4, off Labor Day and am on call for Thanksgiving and Christmas (meaning they dangle the hope of being off but then schedule you somewhere last minute the day before). WTF. And yes, I did try to put it in the system that I wanted off but was denied. What I don't understand is that only the 24 hour stores are open on Thanksgiving and Christmas which means less stores to cover, yet I still can't get either one off as a floater (some days they have around 30 extra floaters!). I bet they'll even throw in an overnight shift for me December 31 to really rub it in.

Do you think there is anything I can do about this? I know some will suggest speaking with the district supervisor, but it seems like I already got that answer when I was denied. I have a feeling they go by seniority but that means I'll get screwed pretty much every year for the next decade or so if that's the case.

Well, I'm night shift and got the same type of thing going. I asked for the night of Thanksgiving and the night after off and they gave it to me.

WVU-Pitt game that day...gotta go and represent.

My wife is in the same boat at her chain. She is a newish grad floater...makes planning for holidays next to impossibe. Last year we found out she would be off for Christmas three days before and bought a last minute ticket to fly out Christmas day to see family. With family all over the country we are probably going to start doing holidays a week or two before / after. Everything is cheaper and the time off si easier to get. It's worst when you don't have the seniority, but once you get a store it will be a lot better.

That's because you work in a superior district.... That doesn't happen other places....

In my district, Thanksgiving and Christmas schedules are determined 2 years in advance. All the other holidays are determined a month in advance for floaters.

I know my holidays 3 years out. I always end up volunteering for 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and New Years because I dig the time and a half, which is total bank.

This is why I'm scared to work anywhere else... the chain I work for is closed on all holidays... just have to get the other days off if you need to travel far.
