Hi, I'd really appreciate some input for you all.

I am in a bit of a conundrum. I already have a few shadowing hours. But, I was wondering if I have too little (18hrs). I don't really enjoy just sitting around when I shadow, so I decided to volunteer (I love it!).

Later on I got a job in the hospital. Now, I have been working in the hospital for close to a year now, should I even bother acquiring more shadowing hours. Is it all that important?

Thanks for any responses! 🙂

Some schools don't much regard a shadowing experience, but most do. In order for your application to appeal to the widest number of schools, it is wise to get in more shadowing. There are some positions that have shadowing embedded, like medical translator, ER scribe, and medical office assistant. If your job keeps you in proximity to physicians for much/some of the time, then your description of the activity would need to make it clear that shadowing had occurred.

One or two more shadowing sessions wouldn't hurt, but if you don't have the time for it, the fact that you work at a hospital will still look really good for you. I only had about 25 hours of shadowing, but I also worked in a nursing home for over a year. I got accepted, so I think that overrode the fact that I didn't shadow that much and didn't have an overwhelming number of volunteer hours.
