Working while in M1/MII

Any time-management wunderkids out there who've been successful working a job during the first 2 years of med school?

I'm just thinking of ways I can keep the debt load down to manageable levels. If I could hold down my current job, or at least work 3 days a week, and then study like a rabid dog for the remainder, is that doable?

Curious to hear from those in the know.

i am far from a genius and i work 15-20 hours a week in biotech - and i'm an M1. i'm also at a pass/fail school. do a thread search on this if you want more info, as i've told my story several times. recently, in fact.

Sure it is, provided that your employer is flexible with you schedule. But you should consider that in the "big picture" the money you make will probably be a small amount compared to your total debt. Maybe it will shave 100 dollars per month off of your loan repayment when you are, say, a Radiologist making $20,000 per month.

You may also come to regret sacrificing your Saturdays or Sundays. THese can be very productive study days.

kudos to those who work during med school. But seriously, does it really benefit you in the long run?

It is very possible to work during med school.. I am doing it and many of my classmates work in the library, EKG techs, paramedics, nutritionists, medical assistants......you name it.

They are all successful in school and it helps with the cash flow problem we all have.

I teach BLS and ACLS for great money.

Thanks to all for the info.

The question in my mind that is answered is that it the answer is probably a case-by-case situation, but by no means is impossible. Its good to know this going in.....
