working while in med school
Started by Micah6:8
I'm a PT and have worked since first year, couple weekend shifts a month as a per diem therapist. It's great money and keeps your skills up. You can definitely swing this a couple times a month especially weekend shifts. I took the 2 months before boards off but worked throughout otherwise.
best of luck with this, if you can work at the hospital that is associated with your school you'll be that much ahead come third year as you'll be familiar with the computers/charting system.

A former colleague of mine worked as a Respiratory Therapist PRN while in med school. She did well in school.
You can teach like MCATs or something at Kaplan too, thats a decent Part-time job that pays well-hourly and not too many hours either...

Do you know if you can teach with a 32 on the MCAT? Their site says you have to be like 90th percentile or something.
At least with TPR, if you have a subject score in the 90th percentile you can teach that subject. The overall score doesn't need to be that high. A 32 should be fine. ... at least that's what the deal was two years ago when i took the MCAT.DRKUBA said:Do you know if you can teach with a 32 on the MCAT? Kaplan requires, I think, at least a 10 on the section you will teach.
As far as working...I would not recommend working right away. However, as an entering M2, I am going to work a few weekends here & there doing golf course maintenance. I have done it for about 8 years now & it has become a hobby of mine. That being said, my hours are 0530-0900 on the weekends. Chances of me getting up and getting anything done before 0900 on the weekends is slim anyway, so might as well make a little money!

I worked during the first 2 years as a sleep tech on Friday, Saturday, and sometimes Sunday nights. With the night shift, there's usually more time for studying and the pay is a little better. I know several nurses who did the same thing. Granted, I have very little recollection of my MSI and MSII years. (My husband used to point me in the right direction and off I'd go!) 😉
However, it's definitely doable.
Good luck!

So I work at Kaplan right now, they require 11 on the section you want to teach. Obviously if u have a 32 you must have had an 11 on the section. I think its a great job working for Kaplan, plus if u start working there say like 1st year of medskool, when it comes time for ur boards 2 years later, Kaplan will hook you up for free-review instead of having to spend a couple thousand dollars for prep. Also, if you do decide to apply and work at Kaplan, PM me and put my name as your referral (I'll get a lil bonus then, hehe) Take care,DRKUBA said:Do you know if you can teach with a 32 on the MCAT? Still on a waitlist but I have gotten certified as a CNA, nursing assistant. Pay is good and working in a contingent position I think could help me money wise - at least for some small things. Little extra money to me for a shift or two a week is better than nothing!

Try going pier diem Jezz, it pays great for being an Aide. Often I can pull out 1,000 pay checks, not too shabby.
Well once your hired as an instructor for PS, you can switch over quite easily. I got a 9 on VR but managed to get an 11 on a practice test and so they let me teach it....DRKUBA said:..great I get to teach my worst subjects and not the ones I am the best at.... Is there a website with info? I would not mind getting some free updated Kaplan Step 1 material.
Go to www.kaplan.com and click on careers and then on kaplan test prep from there, its pretty self-explanatory, you do have to do a 5min audition before you get hired, but its really easy, they just want to make sure ur not a horrible public speaker, let me know u apply, maybe you could put me down as ur referral and ill get a lil bonus, hehe, thanks dude, pm if you got any questions...HunterGatherer said:Is there a website with info?
