world list of 50 best universities

I'm assuming that this list is about grad programs in general?

GO CAL BEARS!!!

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1343642,00.html

this is even more arbitrary nonsense than the us news rankings. how the hell is cal up there above schools that are indisputably better in terms of the quality of students, faculty, and funding they receive? you must've searched for days to find these rankings, sdnstud 😉

perhaps you fail to realize cal's grad programs are the top in the nation in almost all categories; and the quality of students is top notch as is the faculty; not that it isnt at other places, just alot more creativity flowing at Cal, in all subject, than most places

MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY???? (#31 for those of you looking)

Come on!! at least get the name right. grrr. I mean, there is more than one university in michigan.

what a silly ranking. How on earth do you compare caltech with oxford? they must not figure in undergrad educations at all. that's why cal is so high...

Yeah this ranking is so stupid, UT Austin is on there but not Rice? Not to meantion the numerous other schools that are so much better than those on the list. This is gibberish.

davidus said:

yeah, because as we all know Cal is absolutely pitiful as an undergraduate school.

well, certainly plenty pitiful enough to be only #3 in the state of california behind stanford and cal tech. but who cares, right? cuz they're #2 in the far more prestigious "world rankings"!!!

Woohoo!!! I'll take # 24, baby... Try and beat that! 😉

IIT (Indian Institue of Technology) is #41???

This list is even more arbitrarily nonsensical than the US News list.

I agree, Illinois University on the list. Hell, I don't think Illinois could beat out many schools in the Big Ten, let alone get on the top 50 world wide.

what about University of Minnesota? GO GOPHERS!

For those debating the validity of cals undergrad programs, may i remind u that schools like 'furd and harvard dont even have undergraduate business programs. On the other hands, CAL's undergrad business program is ranked third in the nation as is the engineering program. If you look at US News rankings in all other fields (cell bio, math, etc etc...) it is hard to find a subject in which CAL is NOT in the top 5. And it is this faculty that actually teaches the undergrads so I think CAL is surely deserving of its number 2 ranking. In addition, CAL has always been a great school for sports (except football). Now that our football team is ranked 4th in the nation by the BCS and 5th in hte nation by the AP, I think CAL is certainly deserving of its lofty ranking. We all know the US News rankings are garbage. They are heavily biased towards private universities which have low student to faculty ratios. Unlike other prestigious institutions, CAL does not take part in inflating its students grades. The question we should all be asking is why is CAL not ranked number 1. 😀

Like I said about Illinois, not that I am a gopher fan. By the way, it looks like your two amazing running backs and potent offense finally met their match last week 😉

The BCS is a sham, especially when both polls agree! Cal is not #4

UCSD got ahead of UCLA? Bullcrap.
Still, we're in the top 30, I'll take that. Go Bruins.

Are you from Utah and just mad that the utes dropped to 7?
jk.
I really think CAL should be ranked number 2. USC was very fortunate to beat us on Oct. 9. USC is a good team but I would love for CAL to get another shot at them in Florida next year.

Utah is only undefeated because of their opponents. I speak for WI, who may draw CAL in the Rose bowl if SI's predictions hold true.

Haha, yeah u are right. Wisconsin will play cal in the rose bowl if both teams win out (and if OU and SC win out). I think it would be a great game but I really hope CAL gets a second chance at SC in the orange bowl.

usc would've kicked your ass if they had been gelling early on in the season. should i remind you that they almost lost to stanford, too, which is a pathetic team because stanford actually cares way more about having academically accomplished athletes than cal does? usc has steamrolled people ever since, so i would like to see what you guys do against them next time...

I m Illinois resident. I don't know any Illinois university 😕

I only know of
University of Chicago,
Northwestern University
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaing (UIUC)
University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)
University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) Yea it exists!..It just opened I think.
Illinois State University (ISU).

Which one of this is Illinois University?

USC and Cal would get beat by Auburn, Oklahoma, or Georgia. The PAC-10 is always overrated because the competition isn't nearly as good as that of the SEC or Big 12.

I dont think we should be mentioning usc and cal in the same breath as stanfurd. I can guarantee you that 'furd is getting a big time a@# wupping on november 20th in memorial. Stanfurd's football program is one that has went down the drain since Tedford arrived at Cal. It's kinda funny how you metion Stanfurd's near victory...that game was in Stanfurd and your pathetic team still couldn't finish the game off. We (CAL) on the other hand went down to L.A. and almost beat usc in front of their 90,000 fans in front of a national audience . In addition, the following week, the third best team in the pac 10 (asu) went down to USC and lost by 30+ points. I know you guys in furd are pissed that you continue to win in sports that no one really cares about and can't win in the sports that matter the most. Your bball team was ranked number 1 last year and yet you guys still managed to drop out in the first week of the NCAA tournament.

In regards to academics, I think its quite funny you mention this. CAL actually has standards to adhere too that are more stringent than that which the NCAA enforces. On the other hand, FURD being a private junior university has to meet the minimum standards set by the NCAA. So next time you write something, think about it!

I was assuming Illinois U meant U of Illinois, the fighting alliani(sp?) as they did the same thing the U MICH.

I c. So they are talking about U of I or University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Btw, it is Fighting Illini.

I don't know about U of I being better than Northwestern. They did have two Noble Prize Winners last year though.

I don't see the point of these rankings. It is all subjective.

UCSD #24, what what, where you at tritons?
Yet another ranking organization realizing what we have all known for your years..... UCSD straight owns UCLA on every level......location......girls.........academics...... and research. Sorry Bruins 🙁

Cal played one of its worst games of the year against usc and still nearly won. and usc certainly didn't look like a powerhouse when it was losing most of the game to a pathetic oregon state team last week. Academically accomplished athletes?! How about having some athletically accomplished athletes? Yeah, I'm sure Stanford is far more concerned that their players get their coveted communications and sociology degrees than actually winning some games. Miramax or Paramount should buy the rights to the UCLA v. Stanford game because that was the best piece of comedy I've seen in years. I was laughing my ass off for two hours.

You've got to be kidding, right?

The overall record for Big Game is 54-42-11 Stanford. What more do you need? Stanford is obviously better than Cal in the vast majority of sports. And the reason Stanford's football team is never that great is precisely because their average SAT is 1200 while Cal's is <900 (I saw some legit stats on this a few years ago). But Stanford still managed to kick Cal's butt for seven years in a row before Tedford came around. Don't forget one of the key guys on the BBall team last year Joe Kirchofer who's SAT was over 1500. I want to see one Cal athlete in any major sport who can boast that.

My gf went to Cal and there simply is no comparison. It sucks to register for classes and even if there are fantastic professors, you have to deal with waitlists. Trying to get to know your profs is nearly impossible, especially if you're premed. At Stanford, you don't even need to register for a single class until a week or two after classes START. You can shop around all you want and there is almost never an issue to get into any classes, except for maybe wacky unnecessary ones like Social Dances of America or Drawing for Nonmajors...

200. Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst US

My application is in the mail

the list looks fine, except UCB at no. 2? ur kidding right?

this list is absolute trash.

there's no way univ. of virginia should be 73 slots below umass.

I got this from a link on UT's webpage. This is what the rankings are based on:

"The rankings are based on the amount of cited research produced by faculty members, the ratio of faculty to student numbers, a university?s success in attracting foreign students and in attracting internationally renowned academics.

An additional factor in the rankings is the findings from a previous Times Higher Education Supplement survey in which 1,300 academics in 88 countries were asked to name the best institutions in the fields they felt knowledgeable about.

The five factors were weighted and transformed against a scale that gave the top university 1,000 points and ranked everyone else as a proportion of that score."

Right. you can also drop your classes AFTER your final so that you can perserve your 3.999 GPA. Oh yea, your average undergraduate GPA is 3.6 and 50% of students in each class get A. Stanfurd is awesome!!!...I should have chosen to attend Stanfud community college 5 years ago.

I think its funny that most everyone who is trashing this list is baseing their opinion on the US News listing. No one wants to give any credit to the US News rankings until a new list comes along that attacks their preconcieved notions of university rankings. Now the US News list is the standard, and this list is crap.

tedford will win for 7 yrs in a row over furd if he stays around; Why are you guys arguing whether the sports players have high sat scores? how about if the students with high sat scores can play sports? they are both arbirtrary, useless arguments.
look, cal will not beat furd in the rankings b.c we have to take >95% of students from california, which is not true for the grad school. However, our top students at Cal can likely outcompete the top students elsewhere b.c of the culture of the school. The only other schools that are close to the hard-nosed culture are cit and mit. Besides, Cal is among the most fun place to go to school; the stanford area/culture blows

you hit the nail square on the head. cal's got smart people for sure, but they're not the athletes i can say that much. and all the smart people there are stanford rejects anyway, except they go there for four years and try to forget about it. it's good that you bring up the big game record, and what about basketball, a sport no one cares about? has getting a thorough smacking laid on you every year made you cal students this stupid?

again, it doesnt make sense why it matters that there are stanford rejects at cal? I think most of us know that you arent fully developed through high school though alot of middle of the road stanf students would beg to differ in order to hold on to a bygone era of their lives; being in a place like cal and interacting with the best faculty and engaging in the best research equips the best cal students better than it does the best stanf students. There is no mommy and daddy at cal which is why so many students sink; but the best that swim come out more prepared for life than the stanf students.

yeah, you totally should've chosen them before they rejected your ugly, public-school attending tramp ass. oh by the way, we can't drop classes after the final and only 20% of the class (slightly less for engineering and slightly more for humanities) get A's, which is unfortunate because 100% of the class here is smarter that the portion of your classes that get A's...
