Hi all,

It seems that my grades weren't quite up to parr with what I usually expect from myself... and it has lowered my GPA quite a bit. I got a B in one science class and a C in another, and a B in a humanities class (by far my worst semester). My GPA is now a 3.69, and I'm studying for the MCAT. I'm a junior year-wise.

It was Finals week that really did me in... something really horrible came up personally the Sunday before finals week started (close friends passing away in a car accident with a drunk driver), so my mind was totally off that week and it reflected on my finals. I feel horrible and disappointed in myself for allowing this to happen, but I had no choice but to be at a hospital any chance I had during finals week, so I couldn't study for anything, and stayed up for 4 days straight (my mind was pretty loopy and fatigued heading into the last couple finals)

I'm wondering a couple things... should I retake the class I got a C in? what about the B? I know ALLO schools look at both grades... would they frown at the sight of a retaken class or would they take into consideration the improvement made gradewise. Should I just take a couple other science classes and ace them, so they see that I have many varying science classes on my transcript?

I just wish there was a way they could know my circumstances this past semester and would consider letting it slide. I'm very worried about how this one week has ruined my chances into getting into a good Texas MD program at Baylor, UTH, Southwestern, or UTMB in Galveston (my top school choices)

I could really use some advice and honesty. Thank you all so much.

The median GPA for those accepted into allopathic medicine colleges is 3.65. You're fine and dandy. If you're that concerned, re-take it, otherwise calm yourself.

Sorry to hear about your friend passing.

I wouldn't worry about your GPA this semester. It's understandable that you weren't able to study for finals properly with such a terrible thing happening. Next semester, just do what you did the previous semesters and keep your grades up. I don't think you need to retake any of the classes unless you feel it would give you a better understanding of the material. You shouldn't have much of a problem grade-wise as long as you improve next semester. 🙂
