Our school has a discounted membership to AMA and other regional organizations. Is it worth it?

I've heard most choose to jon because the freebies are worth at least as much as the membership fee, and often more, so you might as well. Plus some of the lectures and enrichment activities can be pretty interesting

Hi there,
The AMA is very worthwhile to join and participate in. You make professional contacts with the local physicians in you area. I was the student rep from my medical school and by third year, I was pretty well known by many of the attendings at our outside rotations. I was also able to get some great letters of recommendation from nationally known phycians when residency application came along due to my particiaption nationally in AMA in addition to my academics.

I was able to get JAMA free which is one of the journals that I read regularly during medical school.

hi nj, what did you do for the AMA and how did you become the school rep? what exactly is the AMA and what does it do for students and vice versa? thanks

the free stuff is worth it, but man, the leaning tower of JAMA in my living room is kinda gettin' on my nerves. I swear i get that magazine twice a week.....i really should call them and cancel that ish

The freebies are worth it but reading JAMA didn't last very long...now they get chucked right out of po box before they even get into my place...maybe I should cancel so I don't have all of those tree's on my conscience
I did consider the political leanings of the organizations before I gave them my money though....freebies or no freebies some things I just won't give my money to!
I would recommend the local AMA groups so you can interact with others...sometimes there are even free dinners once a month that you will be invited to (we have one if you are a member of the Durham County AMA or something)
many of the regional medical associations are free for med students and their yearly meetings are fun...
