I'm undecided as to whether I'll apply next cycle or during my senior year ('13). What is the general consensus about taking a gap year? For me, it wouldn't be to improve GPA or clinical experiences, but rather to take a break from school and do something fun and meaningful.
Does anyone who took a gap year without a main intention of improving his/her resume have any comments about this?

I think that recharging your academic batteries and and creating some good memories would be an excellent strategy to help you succeed in med school. Unless your educational loans are going to require payback if you are no longer a student. Then rethink the idea.

I considered taking a gap year, but decided to graduate early instead. I don't have a full year off, but I'll at least have more time before jumping into med school in August. Hopefully I'll be able to work for a couple of months to make some extra $$.

I think its a great idea actually. I'm actually on my gap year right now. I'm applying this cycle (and have been admitted!). I'm just working and enjoying life right now. No real commitments except for work (which is just paying the bills and giving me some money to spend). I am similar to you as in I did not take a gap year to improve my app. Really, I took it to take the MCAT, I just didn't have time during undergrad to study, and I took it right after I graduated. Then proceeded with the application cycle.
