Question says it all.
I've been investing for a couple years now and I've gained a lot of interest in the stock market, but I would never consider going into finance over being a doctor. I would also get paid better than scribing and other possible medical gap year positions.

Would it be looked down upon even if I continued shadowing / volunteering / doing clinical work?

If you already have good ECs (volunteering, clinical, research, leadership etc.) and intend to continue some of these during your gap year, working at Morgan Stanley is fine. However, be prepared to answer why medicine and not finance? question thoroughly.

Hmm... I'm not too sure honestly, but am leaning towards it not looking bad. I don't see why it would look bad as long as you continue to volunteer. I think that if anything, it would be Morgan Stanley that would not want to hire you since you are looking to go to medical school.

I am uncertain whether or not it will look bad, but just understand that these types of internships are stupid competitive. My friends who are interested in investment banking would donate a kidney to intern at Goldman Sachs. Just to put it in perspective, in 2014 Morgan Stanley received about 90,000 applications for summer analyst and associate positions. 1,000 spots were available.
It's probably even more competitive for a year long internship (entry position??). Unless OP is at HYPS or has something awesome about them looking bad probably isn't even a question

I've been playing pickup football for a few years and really enjoyed watching the superbowl last year, but would never consider going into the NFL over being a doctor. Would a gap year spent on the practice squad for the Patriots look bad?

Thats the dreammm

Your call OP. I had an internship in another field before my senior year and have been absolutely roasted about it in my first interviews. Just be aware that they will want to do into depth with you on it.

This would most likely guarantee an acceptance at Harvard so I'd be all in. $7,000 per week is also attractive.
