Would a generic LOR from a DO sink me?

Honestly, I am desparate. I want to apply to DO schools as well as MD, but I have no DO letter currently. I shadowed a DO, but for whatever reason he flat up turned me down for a letter. I was thinking of asking my personal doctor for one, even though we don't know each other outside of the exam room. If she says yes and the letter is generic, is this a bad thing?

Only a few schools require a DO letter, (though at those that don't, it is preferred). Folks have been accepted to DO schools with no DO letter, with an MD letter, with DO letters.

I can't speak of the benefit of a generic letter, as I don't know what the rest of your application and LORs might look like. Have you spoken to your personal doctor about shadowing? They might be open to that, and then they could write you a much better letter.

You should be fine. The letter I got from a DO was nice but quite brief. She asked for my resume and based the letter primarily off of that

I shadowed a DO who did the exact same thing to me. It was kind of rude, but I guess it's better to have no DO letter than a bad one.

really?
did you leave a bad impression when you shadowed?
How were your experience, I find that strange

I used my family doc ( I did originally shawdow his practice before becoming a pt). Just gave him my CV and personal statement and that generally is enough for most docs to make a half decent letter. Best of luck

I honestly thought it went really well. He did agree to write it when i first asked for one and when i followed up later on he said that he couldn't help me. It was so out of the blue because he had asked for my CV and resume and then changed his mind.

Also, my doctor's office doesnt allow shadows unfortunately.

A generic DO letter should be fine as long as you have some other letters from people who know you well.
