Hey everyone, I'm a longtime lurker & just got my Canadian DAT scores today. PLEASE DON'T EXIT THE THREAD CAUSE I'M CANADIAN!!.. I would like advice on my scores, particularly my Chem score but first I'll explain my situation-- applied late, app sent out around mid October, LORs all sent out, I have good EC's, shadowed a dentist, volunteer in his office now, and have about a 3.7 GPA after this semester.. it would be even higher without considering first year, last 2.5 years have all been 3.75+. Anyway, here are the scores:
Bio- 21
Chemistry-16
TS- 19
Reading Comp- 22
PAT-21
AA- 20

Is the 16 a red flag? Does anyone have experience with this, gaining acceptance with a science score that low? It just seems so super competitive now. I've applied to 9 schools, and they were all just waiting on these scores.
ANy input would be very much appreciated, I'm totally stressed out about it and my carving score was low but I was hoping it wouldn't be considered as I've heard.
THANK YOU!!🙂

looks like you got everythings in a good shape, except for your chem score. 16 considered below average in most schools, what schools did you apply at?..Just relax. I think You have a chance to get accepted in at least 1 of the 9 schools you applied at. 😀
good luck :luck:

which 9 did u apply to? and wat did u get on carving?, case nyu and louisville all take a look at carving from what i've heard. i think BU and Tufts don't, but the 16 is a red flag at tufts (they have cutoffs).

My heart sank reading your msg-- I've looking into the cut-offs for all the schools but it was sometime in the summer so I've pretty much forgotten them and was going to look into it all on MOnday after my finals.
The 9 schools I applied to are: Pittsburgh. NYU, Boston, Tufts, Detroit Mercy, Midwestern, Maryland, Temple, and Howard
I thought I would maybe have a decent shot at an interview at NYU but that totally sucks. Should I write the American DAT sometime in January? I know this is ridiculously late but I mean, I've already applied and paid all of the secondary fees.. but there are other reasons why I want to get in this year.. personal as well as the same reasons as everyone else.
any other input would be awesome..

k so I found this information on Tufts website:
DAT Requirement:

*Please note new DAT requirements for 2009-2010 application cycle*
Test must be completed after June 1, 2007; applicants are strongly encouraged, though, to complete it before January 1, 2010;
Minimum Scores:

  • 16 Academic Average
  • 17 Perceptual Ability
  • 17 Reading Comprehension
  • 16 Total Science
The Canadian DAT is also accepted.
*Please note that the Admissions Committee will only consider scores from the first three DAT attempts.

16 TS would mean that they don't look at the individual scores right? My TS was a 19 so would I sitll be okay? Is this the most up to date information or should I call the school?

I think according to those cuts you should be okay, but I haven't seen many ppl get in w/ a 16 in a science (red flag). But your gpa is also high so that might help. It might be worth taking the american DAT because I think schools only look at your highest attempt. however, ive taken both the cdn dat and the american one. I took the cdn one that u took in nov 09 (still haven't gotten the scores!), but the american one imo is a bit tougher cuz it encompasses a lot more material (math and orgo are very time consuming).

you think I should take the American one for this cycle or just hope for the best right now? I know its low, the CDN dat is just so unpredictable. I've heard that American follows more along the lines of the popular study guides, did you find that was true for you?

I'm curious about this. A 20 PAT this november test was a 53 percentile. Does that look very bad?

No, they don't see percentiles. A score of 20 is competitive.

Does anyone have anything to add to my question.. I'm honestly really upset and would really like to know if I should bust my *** off and study while taking 5 courses next semester and write the American dat..

Hmm...you can try McGill. They're a little less anal on the GPA, and your DAT scores are definitely above what they consider to be competitive (18 is what I was told). Canadian schools tend to look more at the AA as opposed to individual science scores, which in your case is very good (from the schools I've asked, not one has told me about any cutoffs other than for RC, which in your case would not be a problem). Not sure about american schools. My guess is you would have to call each one to check. As for carving, the answer I always got was "well it's on the report, so we have to look at it, but it's less important than the rest of the scores". It just seemed like they were trying really hard not to tell me that they don't look at carving.
