Would it be pointless to start to apply now?

I wasn't planning on applying to medical school this year, but I have just realized that I do want to start in the fall next year. It seems that most of you have already submitted primaries and secondaries and so I was wondering if I would be at a great disadvantage to apply now (late August)? Should I just wait until next year (although I don't know what I would do for a year)? I really don't want to wait, but if I'm going to get rejected anyway, I don't want to waste my time. My grades and MCAT are both about average for an applicant. Of course, I also have a lot of extracurrics too.

What would you do in my situation?

Apply ASAP and you should be fine.

yeah just hurry up. keep in mind 75% of the people on this board are neurotic overachievers lol.

Try to write a PS as soon as possible, it's the hardest part of AMCAS, if you can get it done in a week or so, you won't be too far behind us, people submitting after August MCAT. Some secondaries come in even before AMCAS is processed. Try to submit within the next couple of weeks and do secondaries as soon as they come.

you still should be able to apply now why not. I remember the ppl that applied for class of '08 ( which starts this year). there were still ppl applying in october and november last year that got interviews, but I'm not saying wait that long. all I'm saying is that you still have a great amount of time to apply. the interviews from last year applicants lasted up until this year. I remember hearing an applicant say that a school just recently(like in may) asked them to come for an interview for the class of '08, they are about to start school soon, although some of them have started full throttle now!! anyways, I wasn't trying to go that deep into thought I just think some of these applicants are waaaaaay tooooooo stressed about applying. Yes, I know it is your life we're talking about, but just go ahead and apply if you want to enter in the fall of next year, what's it going to hurt?? 👍 😉

Thanks everyone! I started feeling like a complete underachiever and slacker compared to everyone else on here who are on top of things. I will get the ball rolling and I wish you all luck with everything!

i'm in the same situation....it's nice though to know i'm not the only one that feels this way. my suggestion is to get everything done as soon as possible. as another member mentioned, get your PS finished and your AMCAS submitted. the worst is waiting for them to be verified and over with. i hope it's not a disadvantage to apply now, especially with everyone already getting interview invities already....I'M STILL WAITING FOR SECONDARIES TO ARRIVE!! like you, i didn't know if i was going to apply this year, but after rationalizing my pros and cons, i decided for it! if you want to keep in touch back and forth throughout this ordeal, just message me....it's easier when someone is going through the same predicaments as you.... 🙂 ...but i guess everyone on this board is feeling the same way, they're just ahead of the pack right now.....

I agree. Don't forget the transcripts, though! Get your school(s) to send those stat.

And the moment you submit your AMCAS, start searching this site for secondary essays and begin working on them before you receive them, especially for your state schools.

If you can just send your essays away without having to sit down and write them upon receiving them, you'll be more than fine.

yah, this is great advice, as is the transcripts one.
also, as you are writing your PS, you may wanna keep some of the essay questions in mind from secondaries, so that you can set yourself up well when those come around.

and, remember, SDN is full of neurosis. another good piece of advice if you wanna apply right away is to not visit SDN too much 🙂

good luck

Best advice yet...

It's so damn addicting, though. :meanie:

As someone who applied to med school on October 31st of last year, I'd tell you to definitely apply. Not that I am endorsing doing what I did, because I had alot of waitlist stress over the summer, but it is possible to get in even when you apply late. 🙂

Everything else is under your control. Get those letters of rec going immediately. Those are what will hold up your application. Everything else can be completed in one day (one very long day 🙂 )

I majorly procrastinated with the whole application process. I can't remember the exact date, but I didn't submit my AMCAS until the end of October or the beginning of November (I even missed the deadline for several of the schools I wanted). After that, I didn't even do most of my secondaries, only submitting about four, for schools in which I was really interested. Despite all that everything worked out, and I am at a top 5 school -- and I got in normally, not off the wait list.

So the moral is, don't worry. You can apply late and everything will still be fine. 😉
