I've always regretted not doing undergraduate research, so I've been looking into the labs at my school for the fall semester. If I were to find a research position and start in, say, August, then send an update letter to the schools where I'm applying, would that be of any help? I'm planning on doing research anyway if I can get in, but I won't bother to send letters to the schools if that won't make a difference.

Interesting topic. Are you asking if this would "check the box" for research, thus making you a more competitive applicant? 😳

I'm not deluding myself that it would put me level in the "research" area, considering that most applicants who have done research have participated for a year or more already... just wondering if it would help even a little.

Sure, why not? Not only will it give you something to talk about in interviews/update letters, it'll also make you a better candidate next cycle (if you're at all worried about that).

Have you had any research experience up to this point?

No prior research experience. I came back to school two years ago and have been working full-time in addition to school, so I didn't feel I had the time even though it interested me.
